Back-to-Back Titles for Bernosky and TEN HP Championships in Total

Breaking News — Carl Bernosky hung on to win his 10th National High Power Championship, with a 2391-141X final Aggregate. Just one point behind, after four days of competition, was 2010 Champ SGT Sherri Gallagher. Sherri shot a 200-12X in the final event (Crowell Trophy Match) to close the gap, but it was too little, too late. Bernosky had a lead going into the last event, so even though he dropped a point (scoring 199-13X in the Crowell), he was able to prevail by a single point. Had Carl dropped two points, he still would have won the Championship because Carl had a higher X-Count than Sherri, who finished with a 2390-131X Agg. All in all, it was a well-deserved win for a great shooter, one of the best ever, that’s for sure.

This was one of the most exciting championships in recent memory. Two shooting marvels, both past High Power National champions, were neck and neck all the way ’til the end. And either could have lost the title with one errant shot or crossfire. SSG Brandon Green of the USAMU shot a superb match to finish third with 2388-135X. In fourth, just a point behind Green was the living legend David Tubb. David’s final score was 2387-145X. That means David had the highest X Count of the top 5. He’s still got the skill set, that’s for sure.

We congratulate Carl Bernosky on his hard-fought victory in 2012. This title brings Carl’s total to 10 High Power Championships, really an amazing accomplishment. We also congratulate runner-up SGT Sherri Gallagher, and all the shooters who competed at Camp Perry in the High Power Championship events.

I was there. Congrats to Carl on another championship. And to anyone shooting this year's high power at Camp Perry, you all deserve a medal for the conditions that were endured and fired under!

And the guy does great stockwork! After I am able to get some pictures taken, I plan on posting one example of what he can do! Congratulations Carl!

There's a good follow-up story at the NRA BLOG. Carl is interviewed at the award ceremony. He describes his training procedures for Camp Perry, and the challenges of wind and weather during the match.

The last day was tough, and Carl saw 1/3 of his lead vanish on the first shot of the last match (Crowell Cup). But he prevailed:

"Down to the last match of the championship, Sherri need three points to [win] or two to tie. But with a tie, she would also have to make up the 13 X deficit. A tall order for for any competitor and their rifle.

"I knew I had at least a one point lead and then I probably had X's," Bernosky explained. "I didn't exactly know where we were cause I wasn't watching [the scores]."

When the match tower announced that shooters could fire when their target appeared, Carl started on the last 20 shots of this year's NRA High Power Rifle Championship. There was a three point cushion. It was practically over. Just maintain the lead. With the black bullseye in his sights, he pulled the trigger - a nine.

"I shot the first shot and thought 'well that was way too many [already],'" Bernosky chuckled. "That was not where I wanted to drop a point."

A little shaken, Bernosky refocused on the task at hand. Firing one perfect shot after another, he secured the high power rifle championship with a 199-13x. "I just knuckled down and shot the rest of them in," he said.

Carl is a perfect gentleman...always willing to help anyone and is very approachable. He defines "champion".

Congrats to you Carl and many more championships to you!

Carl is like a fine wine, he just gets better with age. "Way to go Carl."
Congratulations and keep going. You and all the Camp Perry shooters are a credit
to this wonderful sport. I'd surely hate to have to live on the point difference among these top shooters. Just goes to show what can be accomplished with hard work and dedication.
