Canik TP9sfx Pistol Opinions

I’m thinking seriously about shooting pistol competitions. I never have done anything in the pistol realm and I am not sure if I will like it. To help insure I won’t spend a ton on something that I may or may not enjoy, the Canik TP9 sfx is one way to go. Every review that I have read or viewed gives the pistol a thumbs up. I was hoping that some members might have first hand knowledge. Thanks for your time.

I don't shoot a Canik but as a frame of reference, Jason Bradley used a TP9SFX to come in 2nd place at last year's USPSA Factory Gun Nationals in Carry Optics. Renowned competitor Nils Jonasson has also used one to win many high level matches.

So in short, no I do not believe that the pistol will hold you back in any way. They seem to have a very good trigger out of the box for a striker-fired platform but do currently lag behind other entries in the aftermarket support category. Just some things to consider, good luck on your quest!

I'd have a really hard time not recommending a Glock for your situation. If it doesn't work out, you'll have no problems reselling it. Parts, Mags and other accessories are plentiful. You'll have a wide variety of options based on your price range.

If your at a match and your gun goes down, you can probably borrow someone's backup Glock. I've lent mine out plenty of times.

If it's something you end up enjoying and you're more proficient with it, you can look at something less mainstream like the Canik.

I own a Glock 34. My local gun club allows to check out many different models, the Canik is on their checkout list and I gave it a whirl. I absolutely love my Glock 34, but if I didnt own either, I would have for sure bought the Canik! Trigger and the site alignment for me was the lock. Plus you get a few extra rounds in the mag.

Got to play with one that a Shooting Buddy bought, and helped him sight it in.
I’m not an RDS type of handgun shooter, but was very impressed overall with the quality, accuracy and trigger with this Canik.
A quick tiny adjustment of the sight and if you look closely in the image (solar flare unavoidable) you can see the groups on target at 7 yds for familiarization/zeroing.
I have big hands and it fits my grip style perfectly, yet it is still light and agile to move from target to target.
It is a great package, with the trigger caveats as noted above, but you will have a long way to go to progress beyond this gun’s capabilities.

Yes definitely buy the canik.
I ran several hundred rds through one a couple years ago and it was an excellent pistol.
my first choice would be a cajunized CZ but twice the cost.

I'll join the wagon with positive feedback on the TP9SFX. Out of the box it's a very smooth shooting pistola that really doesn't need any mods to the trigger if you're an entry level competition shooter. Yes, the CZ Shadow is the Cadillac with Cadillac prices...for $600.00 the Canik is a helluva bargain.

I’m with you on being a Glock fan. I had a couple that I used for Carry before someone broke in my house and stole all of my guns. :(

Thank you all for your help. Basically what I had seen and read, but you never know if they person reviewing is benefitting from a good review. Y’all have a great day!

Hey Scott love your verse. Have you checked on ammo supplies? For me becoming proficient with a handgun required practice, practice, and a little more practice. Good luck.
I don’t have much, but I have a couple thousand rounds for training and a thousand primers, brass, bullets and powder for competition. If I purchase one, I start looking seriously.

I've shot the original TP9. Not the S, or SF models.
Really liked it! Liked the trigger!
And i'm picky as all get out on pistol trigger feel.
Almost as good as the Walther PPQ Q5.

I am not even in the market for a 9mm, but all you guys have me sold. I went back and read most of the reviews and they back up what you are saying. Carl in Yakima.
