Can you recommend a scope for my .17 HMR?

I recently bought a CZ American in 17HMR. I don’t have any experience with this cartridge, but wanted something with a little more snap for killing skunks in my backyard in the fall, and some summertime woodchucks. I bought a set of Talley mounts and a Leupold 3.5 x 10 x 40 black matte finish. I wanted something with the feel of my centerfire deer rifles for some walk around hunting and shooting. With some luck I will get everything put together this weekend and maybe even get to shoot depending on the weather. The way I look at it is if I can’t successfully make a hit at 100 to maybe 200 yards on a chuck or coyote with a 10 power scope I better go back to shooting class 101. The scope does have the CDS dial and I hope to be able to use the dial to make somewhat longer shots. I know Leupold made this identical scope minus the CDS in silver some years back. You might keep your eyes open for something like this or put an add on here looking for it if you think this power range would work for you.

This is a nice choice if you like FFP ($312). It's a really short 30mm tube 3-12x. I've had it on everything from my .17HMR to 7Rem Mag with zero issues. The only caveat is narrow rings and so short one needs something like a pic rail to allow for proper eye relief.

I think you have the right idea by waiting for a good sale and browsing the classifieds and flea bay. Most of the time when I’m looking for used scopes on eBay they are way over priced but there are some good deals that come up now and again, you just have to be patient. Same with the classifieds here. The S Tac that’s been mentioned a few times is a great value when they go on sale, I’ve picked up two for 250.00 new. Right now Europtic has a good deal on a 3-9 Trijicon, looks like the reticle has hash marks which would be nice for the 17hmr. Fun caliber! Good luck. Link below is to that Trijicon I mentioned.
