Call me oldschool

Hey got a ? I'm planning on shooting 600 f class and wanting to shoot a 30-06 do any of you all shoot this caliber or is it a waste of my time and money
Thanks

OK...

"Hey, you're Old School!!"

That being said, the '06 may not be the most state of the art, but it will not embarrass you, and it may surprise you.

If I'm not mistaken there is an article on this site somewhere, maybe guns of the week, where the author talks about shooting LR with his '06.

German Salazar has done a lot with a 30-06 and written about his results in his blog. Rifleman's Journal. Here is a link to his site.

Go to the search function and put in "30-06" and you will get pages of info, all excellent stuff. The big Berger Hybrids make the 30-06 an interesting possibility for mid-range shooting.

Well, that will put you in F-open competing with guys shooting 6mm, 6.5mm and 7mm with multiple letters after the numbers on the headstamp.

Tell us about the 30-06 rifle you are planning to shoot with. Barrel length, contour, scope, etc.

heheh, I went the other direction at 600. I built a 223.

At 600 yards you should be fine if you build an open gun. If you just build a rifle that you can shoot for multi purpose then the only concern would be that the barrel be heavy enough to stand the heat from the F class strings of fire.

In any case you can have fun with it.

This is just an opinion......but......If you are going to be shooting f-class midrange, go with a 6BR, BRX, or Dasher. Easy to tune, cheap to shoot, great barrel life, easy on the shoulder, inherently accurate, and the list goes on. The 6BR class gun is a great Varmite rifle and will easily kill a deer, hog, coyote, ground hog, prairie dog, etc.
This isn't saying a 30/06 wont do the above.....I just saying...

2 cents

This one won't hardly shoot:

It comes down to what does he want to shoot. In the wayback times when there were no classes in USPSA/IPSC, just guys shooting I was shooting a 45 with iron sights (did run a comp) against guys with 38 soopers with optics. I was never going to compete with the guys at the top of the game, but I had fun. (and my steel fell with more authority)

If he wants to play with a 30-06 it won't get embarrassed. Is it the ideal 600 yd F class rifle? surely not, but then again there are people who enjoy shooting M1 Garands and M1As in service rifle too. I was doing a Service rifle clinic the other day and overheard a shooter saying he typically shot 10 points higher with an AR, but he was shooting a Garand that day.

I'm going to use a Bat action with a 28 inch long krieger hv contour barrel with a 1-10 twist and a nightforce scope

There are a variety of reasons why a 30-06 is not the ideal rifle for F class at any distance, let alone 600.

Recoil, at 600 many of the low recoil bench rest type calibers work well. A personal note on recoil. I've been shooting 308s in F-TR for 3 yrs now, and a 308 is not a particularly heavy recoiling round. Yes pushing 200+ gr bullets it will knock you out of position but it's manageable. Last month I finally got my 600 yd F-TR rifle in 223 finished and shot a match, holy smallbore batman! Shooting a low recoil round in a 20 shot match is different, very different, when the scope never leaves the 9 ring on recoil it's mentally and physically a different match

Ballistics, to run even with a .284 ballistically a 30 has to push a much heavier, longer bullet to get the same BC, see #1 above

Case size, the 30-06 gives up volume in relation to bullet size (see #2) compared to the short magnums so it has a velocity handicap
The 30-06 is a capable round and the shooter is more important than the bullet, but all other things being equal, there are other caliber choices that give advantages. Shooting at 600 opens the door for a number of calibers that suffer at 1000.

Build what ya want man....and have fun with it! If someone were to win a match shooting an '06....you wouldn't be able to find a .30 caliber barrel or '06 reamer!

Some folks just don't understand about 'old school'!! ;D

The ole' ot six was good enough to blow the mustache off of Hitler ....... Why not ? After you find the obvious reasons , rebarell it to a 280 remington...... Nostalgia and logistics meet, and have beautiful children .......

And this is a gun you already own or one you're having built?

BTW, you aren't "old school" until you're shooting something with "Ballard" or "Sharps" as part of the name.

I just started building it
I would probably not pick .30-'06 for a newly built rifle. You will be competing against better suited, more modern cartridges. OTOH, if you already had the gun, there would be nothing wrong with shooting it.

Good for you! You will improve your wind reading skills tremendously. Consider the 185 - 210 grain bullets. I find them very efficient in my .308 (which I shoot in conventional Long Range against 7mm RSAUMs and the like). Once you find a load that holds the waterline the rest is your ability to read conditions (and patiently wait for the same ones). Trudie Fay shoots only her Palma rifle in any and all long rang events and she does very well because she knows it inside and out.
Best of luck and enjoy!
