5.56 or .300 Blackout

Oh my goodness the brass cost a lot!

6.5 grendel:
starndard upper receiver
6.5 barrel
Standard gasblock/gas tube (depending on barrel)
6.5 grendel magazines
Stantard BCG but will need a bolt face for grendel

300blk:
standard upper receiver
standard BCG
Standard 5.56 mags
standard gas block and tube
300blk barrel

You can fireform 6.5 grendel brass from 7.62x39 brass but you dont get the full performance of the grendel because of reduced case volume and pressure issues. The brass is pretty expensive even used(goes for around .40/per for once fired)

300blk brass can be made from 5.56 brass which is cheap and plentiful. You just need to decide if the extra performance is worth the extra coin when comparing 6.5g to 300blk. They really are 2 different animals

The 6.5 Grendel is in a whole other class and should not even me mentioned when comparing the 6.8 spc, 223 or 300 blk. Yes its that good. Bra$$ is the issue for a high volume shooter though.

RE: 300 BLK. Some years ago I found a nice retired AF Major who was on a County SD, and was also the range officer for said county. Polices the ranges, and gets the brass. I purchased 6K once fired 5.56 cases shot in AR's, for 3-cents apiece. I also bought 4K 308 cases fired in bolt guns for 4-cents apiece.
Found a gentleman who turns the 5.56 brass into 300 BLK for 8-cents a piece, including shipping to me from SLC in bulk. He did 2000 cases for me. FL sized, annealed, primer pockets reamed.
I shoot both super and sub, and even 247gr cast bullets sub. I can run from 110gr to 240gr jacketed bullets in the BLK. Pick a velocity.
Tell me, if you would, how many rounds of 6.8, and how many specialized magazines to match that hoard would that cost?

Yall are complaining about brass for the grendel... if yall read my post i said ive been getting 15-25 reloads off most pieces of brass easily with the AA/lapua brass.

When you factor the cost of brass by how many reloads you can get if you work it right the brass isnt that expensive... cheaper brass would have a lot shorter life span. A good handfull of brass ive had could have gone past 25 reloads, but i just decided to start a new batch at that point, ive been very happy with this caliber and done lots of data study and such with it.

My loads are different from most people. I use a compressed load of reloader 15 qith 123 amax. My loads crunch powder when the bullet seats, but they arent over pressure and its the witches tit for accuarcy in my gun..

It comes down to what you want to do.

I shoot everything from pulled down frangible to very heavy cast bullets.

It is a round for a action person not fudds.

Without even knowing what you're doing with it, I vote for 5.56...

With that being said, the BO is absolutely a relevant cartridge, and no more "useless" than dozens of other cartridges developed over the last 50 years. I own one in a Model 7; with 110gr V-Max it makes a spectacular walking varmint rifle for shorter fields, 110gr Barnes for deer hunting in PA woods distances (much better bullet selection than "pappy's" 30-30), and my choice of frangible subs or 220gr of choice to tool around with. All fired with suppressor, regardless of velocity.

If I had to, could trust the BO as a single rifle to hunt east of the Mississippi with. Different strokes for different folks.

I know a few guys that have 300 blks that run them subsonic with night vision scopes and a suppressor. They go out weekly killing a slew of hogs constantly. So i know it kills hog dead.

I've had more of your 'action' than you'd care to hear about!

No I would listen. I just am not impressed. You are not the only person here who has been in a two way range. Most of us just do not throw that card at the drop of a hat.

My comment still stands.

There are a lot of good choices being made here but to me what it comes down to is magazines. Will they run 100%? I have purchased many so called good to go magazines only to find out they don't run 100%. When I see a Grendel magazine that is 100% I will probably move in that direction.

I have one and it presents it's own problems for me. I don't reload for it yet, but there is an array of ammunition out there for it. I switch from 110-125 to cheap Fiochi 147 fmj, to 220 subsonic. So, it requires a good repeatable scope and notes for the different weights or a sight in session at each change. I don't like the rainbow trajectory, and the subsonics are not exactly packed with power. Store bought ammo isn't cheap other than the fmj stuff. When I get my stamp I will build a SBR which should be nice with the suppressor.

So, I think that for me, the BO will be a champion suppressed armadillo gun.

If I had a wallet full of money and could build a dream gun, I would go with one of the small frame AR 10's, and a top shelf barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor.

What mags are you having problems with? Is it just with the grendel?

With the 300-221 I have not had any problems with any mags except these "colt" mage that are so cheap they bend when fully loaded. There is a easy fix for pmags and heavy bullets. Just take a chisel and remove the internal rib. They still work with 5.56 and in a full auto.
