Caliber restrictions - Camp Butner

In addition to the 30 caliber limit at Camp Butner, effective immediately, 30 caliber magnums are no longer allowed on range 4 according to the NCNG. Additional caliber and/or weight restrictions will be posted on the club website (www.northstateshootingclub.com).

Its been great shooting there. I guess all good things come to an end. I would sure like to know how they came up with just that caliber. I don't see how the 7mm's aren't on that list. Or a 223 shot over the berm at 200 yards.

Time to find somewhere else to call home.

7mm may be next. They did a range study and determined the area behind the backstop wasn't large enough for magnum 30 caliber cartridges.

So it's an angle thing and not caliber? Or do they think a 300win is going to go through the berm?

Drop area from what I'm told.
Yes that's correct. They're looking at the total flight distance for a given bullet and velocity. I can't see how the 7s won't be next on their list. My guess is the largest cartridge you'll be able to shoot in the future will be a 6.5/284. We'll see. In any event we'll keep everyone posted.

It's a stunt they learned from the Texas NG. When they couldn't legally keep civilians off the Wolters range, they did their "survey" and proclaimed the fan unsafe for anything but .223s fired from a max distance of 500 yards.

I believe unless the competition shooters band together and start buying large tracks of land, then we won't have but a couple of ranges left in a few years

A lot more restrictions are coming.............get ready.
Over here we had the same restrictions on magnums at the bases for years.
Recently the only public range was reduced to a 100yd from 450yd.

You begin to wonder whats really going on.

The problem I see is they feel a magnum will shoot farther . . When you shoot over a berm and the normal bullet goes 3 miles and a magnum goes 3-1/2 miles What difference does it make. Stupid people do stupid things.

You can't fix stupid Larry

Government at its "best"..... Butner was where I shot my first F-Class match. Great range!

Wish they hadn't done that....... makes no sense whatsoever.....

East Coast shooters looking for an alternative to Butner are always welcome at Bridgeville Rifle & Pistol Club in Delaware - http://bville-rifle-pistol.org. Long Range, Mid-Range and Fullbore... everyone welcome.

Very sad that a great range like Butner would engage in such "politically correct" foolishness.... very sad, indeed.

The State has complete control of that facility. It was transferred to the State in the mid 1950s. You can read the ongoing studies conducted by the surrounding counties via a google search. It appears its an environmental impact thing.
