30 caliber magnum ban at Butner NC

Did you find someone from California to do the study?. Safety is not the problem Larry
 Noise is not only a health issue, but also a safety issue. The study was conducted by Durham County, Granville County, the Town of Stern, the Town of Butner, the North Carolina National Guard and the Kerr-Tar Council. Surveys were conducted, tests performed, and the public was invited to attend the workshops. The civilian population throughout the entire surrounding area has grown substantially. It appears noise is the major complaint and concern. If you'll read the study (roughly 60 pages in length) you will quickly realize the amount of work that has gone into this. They're trying to accommodate everyone.

The range fan study has been around for many years, this isn't the first time it's come up. It becomes an issue with new "management" in the National Guard. There isn't enough room to contain a .300 mag. if it is fired at a max. angle. It WILL fall on land not owned by the Guard. It is however, close to being safe at 1,000 yards, it is definitely not safe at closer ranges. I don't know if the decision is final or not. To my knowledge there has never been an issue with projectiles falling on other people's property, but there have been issues previously with noise.

If I remember correctly, North Carolina has a "Range Protection Statute" that deals with the issue of noise. See NC General Statutes Sec. 14-409.46. Obviously if it is actually a "range fan issue" as opposed to a noise issue, that statute is not at all applicable.

This matter has been referred to NRA-ILA for study. Unfortunately, if it is a true safety issue there is probably nothing that they can do to help.

So it begins..

Here in Arkansas at Camp Robinson they restricted us several years ago per cal, bullet BC and velocity..we can't shoot a 180 hybrid at more than 2500fps....and it's always been restricted to "no magnums or cases with more capacity than 30/06...they can shoot whatever caliber they choose, but we are restricted.

Then, this past week, right before Mid-Range State Championships, we were informed that in order to enter based to shoot, we must have background checks. Our tax dollars are paying the bills, but they keep finding ways to restrict us. Go figure.

Maybe it's time to rev up the Dasher again! If this goes on, I plan to spend more time with mine!

When you have an opportunity to do so, John, you might read the Camp Butner Joint Land Use Study. There is a substantial amount of information to absorb. Listed under "Camp Butner Development Plans", is this: "Camp Butner is too small to fire any weapon larger than 7.62mm/30-06 caliber". The study and development has been ongoing for 8+ years.
Thanks for the info. That's why I'm pretty sure the 7s will be next. The big question will be how far will they go. I'm guessing they'll stop at the 6.5/284 but who knows?
