Cabelas Labor Day Sale.....Meh..

Cabelas is now an ignore store for me, especially after the Bass Pro purchase. I have a pair of boots they will not take back, but are defective, end of game for me.

Have 2 Cabelas in my area; the Green Bay store is closest to me. Rarely, almost never, unless an emergency, do I ever purchase anything from them (been known to for get things needed on a hunting trip). Not knocking the quality of their merchandise, just the prices. I do get a warm fuzzy feeling walking through their gun library, but would not trade mine for theirs. My bad, last fall purchased snow pants and winter boots for my grand daughter from them. When buying for the grand kids, often price is no object. The youngest is a mirror image of my wife and she and I have a special bond. She bumps heads with Grandma regularly. Maybe a shrink could explain it. I just attribute it to a common enemy. Just kidding.

This again is the Gander Mountain business model. Mark up everything above retail then run a "sale" that drops the price down to retail.

How can they stay in business? They won't. The only time Gander had decent prices was when they were liquidating their inventory as part of their bankruptcy

I loved going to their stores 25+ years ago after a gun show just to kill some time.....I've been near a Cabelas and a BP for the majority of my adult life and haven't set foot in one in years!.....It's sad to watch the demise of what were at one point, vibrant, popular places to visit.....I miss my Scheels store in Fargo, they seem to have figured out what CB and BP have forgotten.

No doubt, but that doesn't help we the consumer....that's just corporate bragging rights. Don't you think they would be better off keeping that money and cutting prices a little? Even just a little...?

In the late 70's, early 80's, Gander Mountain was a hell of a catalog company, doubt they ever rivaled cabela's but their pricing was better. They just disappeared, then I heard they had retail only stores, and did enter one in Wisconsin mid 90's? What a joke.

I'm thinking Scheels is the place to shop. We have one in Reno which is five hours away but can always mail order.

Not sure how they stay in business? Greed is a terrible thing . They do support a lot of sports with our money

I like Cabello's but only buy stuff I can see and touch or know exactly what it is, on sale for at least 10% off (comparison with other on-line site costs) and get it shipped "in store pickup" no shipping charges. Cabello's gives me a 5% veteran's discount for in store purchases - worth $25 on that $500 Leupold. At times Mrs. Fyrewall draws attention to me by rushing up to me to hold a shirt up against my body and announcing that it looks so "cute on you sweetie" this interrupts my attention to find a good deal on whatever. Cabello's pays cash for gun sales. I very rarely buy powder at Cabello's as I can get it $2-$3 less at my LGS. Almost all the footwear I buy is from Cabello's.

Every thing that I buy is subjected to cost comparison - "everything is a deal and there is no deal too small". I have no loyalty to any source over another - just cost and service.

I like to watch the fishes swim endless laps or be suspended in the Cabello's fish tanks in certain stores.

When Cabelas dropped Herters decoys, one of the last high quality American made decoy manufacturers, for cheap Chinese imports, I cut up my Cabelas card and never looked back. Same goes for BPS. And as a shooter they never really carried anything I needed anyway. I find more outdoor and shooting gear at far better prices on Amazon! If Amazon sold bullets and brass they would corner the market. I do occasionally check out Sportsmans Warehouse and Academy but I can't recall the last time I bought anything there either? I have all of the hunting and fishing gear I need and if something needs replacing I check out Amazon first. Free shipping and I don't need to leave the house. Same goes with Wongworld, which I use occasionally to order fishing tackle (sometimes they beat Amazon prices) that I need to replace after one of my trips fishing for stumps and squirrels. The nearest BPS is a good hours drive and nearly two to the nearest Cabela's. Not worth the time. Meh...if they closed the doors today it wouldn't impact me either way.
