Thinking about trying a ppc in our benchrest league its a half score half group league been shooting a 30br in a bat b action. Seen some used ones on this site that came off a bat action and thought i could screw one on my action and play around but I'm Leary because they could be shot out or guys don't think they are shooters . What's everybody's thoughts on this? thanks Barry

They can be hit or miss.
Some will buy a rifle for the action and part out the rest. Some will buy a used rifle and automatically put a new barrel on.
You just never know.

I bought a use 6ppc barrel once’s. Also bought older 6ppc that came with old barrels. I bought a PTG throat reamer and so call freshened up the lands. It added 25 thou to the jump so I had to rework my seating depth. By loading a little longer I got away from the doughnut so help out there a bit. I didn’t shoot the old barrels before reaming so I don’t have a comparison unfortunately. What I can say is boshoot single holes at 100 yards.

Many "Competetive " shooters who buy like 10 barrels at a time
Will pull the barrel at about 600-800 rounds and sell it off
The competetive edge goes away at about that round count and starts shooting in the .2's
then will slap in a brand new waiting barrel
I bought a very nice 6PPC barrel once engraved by Hammonds
One of the nicest smithed barrels I have ever seen
had plenty of rifling left for my playing purposes
if its not much more than 600 rounds through it in a PPC and about $100-200 you should be good to go

sounds like a hit or miss which i kind of figured. but for 150.00 may be worth a shot or suck it up buy new and have to like it.

Re-do the crown and you may be pleasantly surprised. Many short-range Benchrest shooters clean very aggressively between relays, stroking back and forth across the crown. We’ve seen how that can hurt the crown which can (though not always) affect accuracy.

Another option with a used barrel is to find bullets that are a slightly bigger diameter. We’ve measured 6mm bullets from 0.2428 to 0.2435.

ALso, with a 30BR barrel, ask for the round count — some guys run these way longer than 6PPC barrels with success.

It was some years back when I wanted a new project & the 6ppc was considered “THE Most Accurate Cartridge” (may still be?). I bought a used Shilen top grade SS 6ppc barrel from a benchrester on a forum. He said it had about 3,000+ rounds through it. The chamber had a tight neck & required case neck turning. He said it still shot in the 1’s & 2’s & came off a 40x action. I only needed to cut for the recoil lug to fit my 700 action. My action was new & not blueprinted. With minimal load tinkering, my rifle would consistently shoot 5 shots .25 or less. I learned a lot from the project & had a lot of fun shooting tiny groups. IIRC I paid $80 shipped.

That rifle had been sitting in my safe for a few years until recently, when curiosity got me again & I wanted a new project. I had that barrel pulled & re-contoured to a sporter weight & re-chambered to a “no-turn" 6BR. I dropped it back into the original ppc stock & it really has a “floating” barrel now! Again, I’m learning a lot from this project & having a lot of fun doing load development & shooting tiny groups. My only regret is not doing a bit more research. A rechamber to 6XC would have fully cleaned up the 6ppc chamber including refreshing the leade. Hmmm, maybe that’s my next project.....
