Butch's Bore Shine

Jim,

Just an update on ordering....I used a credit card....$20 for a bottle (includes shipping).

Paul, That is what they told me, I did get 5 bottles on the CC. They may have since changed since i ordered. As long as they keep making it, you may want to order those blue brushes they sell at Midway, they are the best......jim

I realize this is an old post, but I thought I'd chip in. I have a very old bottle of BBS. The ingredients listed are, "petroleum naptha, water(?), 2-butoxy ethanol, 9-octadecenoic acid (oleic acid - a lipid), ammonium salt (copper cutter), mineral oil, methyl amyl alchol." If you go to Brownel's and get the current 2020 MSDS, you will find who whole lot of other stuff in it and not the ammonium salt. I can't imagine that ammonium salt is unavailable. What's a real hoot is that the MSDS notes the product name as "The Original Butch's Bore Shine." The original product had no such moniker on the bottle.

I am still working on an old bottle (the largest)of Butch's. As a result of this thread, I may buy a smaller one to test, before replacing it. Most of my shooting is with lapped barrels and powders that do not present any special cleaning challenges. If one is looking for alternatives for cleaning at home, it would be hard to go wrong with Wipe Out, or for that matter Patch out. The Accelerator that the same company sells, works with either. I have left Wipe Out in my best barrels overnight, with no problem. A friend who may shoot a lot of rounds between cleanings has found that after removing Wipe Out the last time that it is to be use for that cleaning, that if he dries the barrel and then wets it with Butch's and brushes it a few cycles with a bronze brush, that whatever carbon that remains is easily (wet) patched out. IMO the Wipe Out loosens it but just not enough to come out with patches alone. At the range, I still use Butch's, and if I am not sure that it is getting the job done, after a lot of shooting, I will lightly oil a patch, work a little JB in with my fingers, and short stroke it, paying particular attention to the throat. After that I use wet patches to remove the JB and cleaning residue, and then dry the barrel, including special attention to the chamber.

A most interesting thread as usual , one that continues to receive many answers , ( as it should). When loading and cleaning on the range for short range group BR, I found for me...Hoppies followed by Butches with a bronze brush, and at days end...JB patched . I still had a bottle from the late 60's. I should note... it would take 2-3 rounds on the sighter after that cleansing before it would shoot the way I wanted it to. I should also add, that as a whole, one should pay attention to the words of those that are most knowledgeable such as Mr. Boyd Allen, Mr Shuster, and others with their background, ( to name a few of many)....
My personal experience cleaning at the range for short range group shooting after each match has come to....

Hoppies on a patch, followed by Butches Bore shine w/bronze brush , followed by patches.
At days end, all of the above plus JB, ( of which I still have a jar from the 60's, and another patch of Butches. I should also point out that it takes 2-3 rounds on the sighter ( with my Krieger) before I attempt to go to record target. It does not seem to settle down until I do so. Not sure I understand this, but I won't argue with what the target shows me.

use montana copper killer,it used to be 50bmg ,then they chaged the name. It takes copper out fast and it is strong like sweets. Soooooooo that means let it soak for 15 minutes and patch it out and start over if it didnt get it all and then I use brakekleen and blow it out and a light oil after 1 dry patch to make sure I got it all before the oil. As far as hard carbon goes,I use iosso or jb to remove the hard stuff.[/QUOTE]

I have used Butch’s for many years as a powder solvent, it does have an ammonia smell, so, I guess it would attack copper fouling too.

I recently return to Hoppe’s for powder fouling and general cleaning and swabbing of the bore. A quart of Hoppe’s was $14 and change on Amazon Prime, and IMO it works fine as a general solvent. (I’m old enough to remember and like the smell too)

Once powder is gone I use a bit of JB or Isso to remove carbon fouling. I have tried just about everything on the market to get rid of carbon fouling with less then favorable results. So, if there is any copper (generally I only see copper during break-in, maybe under the carbon?), the JB or Isso will take care of it.

For the price Hoppe’s works to take out powder and clean up after JB or Isso leave their mess.

I bore scope every cleaning so I know what I use works.

For sure !
