bullets not long enough

Just bought a new 6ppc the bullet I'm using right now is a 66gr Euber.The bullets are just long enough to touch the rifling.The question i have is what bullet do i use. The gun has 75 thous. free bore 1/14 twist.

That is a lot of freebore. You will probably need a 7 to 7 1/2 ogive bullet. The standard freebore for most 6ppc rifles is somewhere between 20 to 60 thou.

As stated .075" is a lot of freebore for a PPC. I would consider having the barrel set back and rechambered with a reamer having less freebore.

The Euber has a I believe a 7 1/2 or 7 3/4 ogive. It along with a few other bullets will barley touch the rifling in your .075" freebore chamber. I would take DocEd's advice and have the chamber set back with a reamer with a more conventional throat. It does depend on the bullet you want to shoot. The 7 and 7 1/2 are good with a .060, the double radius bullets,all the rage right now)like 0 freebore to .045".

There is considerable difference in the shapes of Benchrest bullets. If you want to stay with that chamber, might I suggest something like Fowler 66 gr. bullets? They have more shank and are good enough to have recently been used to shoot a potential five shot unlimited 100 yd. record at Visalia. The group was range measured at .025".

I'd have the chamber re-cut. No reason in the world to have .075" freebore with a 14twist barrel.

Ya,why on a new gun; Ill need to send whole gun back .I don't know how to take the barrel off;like to find another way around this problem.Somebody makes a bullet that will work.Bob green built this gun i herd he is one of the best.

Euber bullets are 8 1/2 ogive. You need to find some 7's or close to it. You could call Bob Green and ask him what bullets to try. You might contact Bart Sauter and ask him if he has any of Ed Watson's old 7's around or if he is making any.

Another question. How long is the barrel and was this gun built for short range Benchrest? It could have been built for another use and that is the reason for the long freebore. It might be meant for heavier bullets.

The gun is meant for 100-200 yards, Called Bob green he told me this gun was built for personal use and works great with .075 free bore.He also said 7 ogive bullets should work great with this throat.Can any body tell me were I can get an amount smaller than a thousand.I still cant get a hold of Fowler the phone# does not go through,704-867-3259) does somebody sell the bullets besides Jeff.

Can't imagine why anyone would put that chamber in a 14twist barrel. A 14 twist isn't for heavy bullets and you don't need .075" freebore. You don't need any freebore.

Don't know,the gun shoots bug holes.for sure two groups today that measured in the low .2 first two 5 shot groups through the gun just to see. Could be a shooter if i can find a bullet..

Call Lester Bruno. He stocks Barts bullets and should have Watson's in stock. 66's or 68's should work great. Forget about Ed Fowler, while he's perfectly capable of making a great bullet, he is not capable of running a business.

Mason, Bob Green is one of the top BR gunsmiths around.

One of the things you need to keep in mind is that on the 6PPC's, freebore length is one of the areas where 'smiths do a lot of tinkering. On the 6PPC's, much of the freebore length thinking relates to tuning issues..which may or may not be relevant to you..depending on what you're going to be doing with the rifle,competitive BR, super accurate 'fun gun', etc).

-Some feel a long freebore helps the transition of the bullet into the rifling as well as adding a bit of 'free' case capacity..since the base of the bullet is well up in the neck. The longer freebore length may possibly be easier to tune, as the pressure spikes tend to be a bit less severe than in the shorter or zero freebore chambers.


-Others reduce the freebore length to effectively 'reduce' the case capacity..since the base of the bullet will be further down the case neck. The short-to-zero freebore advocates feel that there may be some tuning advantages to this type of freebore because the pressure differences show up quicker 'on target' than the long freebore chambers, thus giving the shooter a bit of an earlier 'heads up' as to what he needs to change on his tuneup.

The 'middle ground' of 6PPC freebore length is .035-ish which kind of splits the difference between the two schools of thought and allows the use of bullets on either the .790 or .825 long jackets.

If you're concerned about having more bullet in the case neck...which, by the way makes zero difference in accuracy...some 7 or 7 1/2 ogive bullets on the .825 jackets will give you what you're looking for.

Like many things in BR, what things appear to be and what they really are can be two different things, especially to people not really familiar with these guns. So even though the .075 freebore seems at first glance to be incorrect,given most peoples interpretation of 'correct' for a non-BR rig), what you actually have is a chamber/freebore setup that has been built that way by a darn sharp 'smith for a specific reason.
