bullets for 223/ 9 twist

been using the 69 gr smk's to date..would like to try some others
as well. what are some that your finding work well?
now i'm looking at 300 yard shooting,not 100 yards...
most folks talk of minute or angle for 100..also is anyone using h 748
or imr 4320 powders with the 69 grain smk?

With my custom Borden/Krieger 1/9 barrel I have less than .5 MOA and some .25 MOA at 100 m using Berger 73 grains BT.

Easy to tune. Great bullet

I shoot weekly in a competition 100,200 & 300 yds. a fellow there shoots a 1-9 twist and with the 73gr Bergers, its a rare thing if Fred is not in the winners circle.

I've found a good load for my rifle is the berger 70vld attop 25gr varget. I'm using it for 600y.

53 gr vmax. Better balistics than the 69 sierra mk out to 400 yards. I shot 75 gr amax out of my 1-9 savage for years, and it is a great , accurate bullet. But, i am loving the 53 gr vmax . I am using br 4 primers and 26.4 gr of varget. 1.948 ogive. Give them a try.

My Savage w/ a 1-9 T shoots H 75 BTHP's and 77 gn SMK & NCC's inside 3" at 300 yds using VVN 135 & 140.

we use 70gr bergers in 2 guns. 1 gun holds range record 5 shots into 4.89in @ 900yds. also .009in @ 100yds. these bullets shoot lights out with varget period!

The 73 gr bergers shoot exceptionally well out of both my savages. One with a 1-8 twist bartlein and one with a factory 1-9 twist. Best shooting bullet Ive found in the factory barrel. The 70 gr berger vld is a close second but not as easy to tune as the 73 gr. The vld's are sensitive to seating depth. Both varget and reloader 15 have worked well for me.

I keep trying to go with the high price spread in heavies, mainly in the 70-80gr range. I've tried basically everything Berger offers and like the Sierra 69 MK's. But at the end of the day it's 75gr Amax's and 24.2grs of RL15.

I had a savage with the 9 twist, tried 68, 69, and 75 bthp, 70 and 75 vld, and the 80 sierras. The 75 bthp was by far the best, shot .4" at 100 and .75" at 200, using 23.7 grains reloder 15. Every bullet would group, just not as well as the 75 bthp. I was surprised the 80s did decent.

If you hunt coyotes or long range groundhogs give the Sierra 65 Game King a try .303 BC and will put a coyotes lights out. Also the Berger website has a bullet twist calculator that will give you a ton data ... it only works for BT bullets though.

Remington 700 Milspec .223 1/9 twist. Hornady 75 grain HPBTs 24 grains Varget shoot about 3/4MOA. 75 grain A Max can hardly find the paper. 77gn Sierra to be tried in the future

I have a 1:9 twist Howa 1500 I shoot strictly at 100 yards just for fun. I'll put a five dollar bill on the bench and invite you to pick it up if I can't shoot 5 shots with 1/2 MOA performance or better with SMK 69gr bullets and IMR 8208 XBR. I always come home from a morning at the range with several 5 shot groups in the "threes" and sometimes in the "twos".

Unfortunately, the best load is a very mild (and therefore slow) 22gr charge weight with velocities around 2640 fps which is just fine for a 100yd "fun gun", but not so good for longer ranges.

It doesn't do as well with bullets down around 52gr or much heavier than 69gr either. Precision really craps out above 75gr. In other words, it's fun to shoot but isn't really suitable for things like F/TR at 600 yards which is why I have a different .223 rifle for that purpose with a 1:7 twist barrel for shooting heavier bullets.

You might try some of the Berger VLDs and see if you can make the 73gr shoot well at a decent muzzle velocity. That should be just fine at 300 yards and much better than a slow recipe using the 69gr SMKs.

MY TACTICAL SAVAGE 1/9 LOVES 68GR BTHP AND 75 GR BTHP HORNADY W/N-135 WITH GREAT RESULTS

my buddy has a savage model 12 .223 with a shepherd .223 scope on it and he love his hornady 68gr match bullets out of it but I talked him into trying a 70gr berger with the same powder varget. much to his surprise at 900yds his hornadys hardly made a sound hitting plate. the bergers made plate sound like a church bell and really moved it. the big surprise was he had to take 175yds off his hold. the range record here is held by .223 5 shots into 4.89 @ 905yds!

definitely try Berger's 73gr HPBT target bullets (non VLD). In both my 1 in 7.7 twist Krieger AR 15 rifle and my Savage/Criterion 1 in 9 twist bolt rifle, they shoot exceptionally well. .3 to .5 inch 5 shot 100 yd groups in the AR, and .2 to .4 inch 5 shot groups at 100 in the bolt gun. Varget, Benchmark both work very good in either gun, with the nod to Varget in the AR
