1-7 twist barrel with 69 gr SMK's

I have been using the load data from the manuals to try to get a good starting load for my new barrel on my Savage 223 that is 1-7 twist. I have a couple thousand 69 SMK's I would like to shoot through this rifle, have some 77 SMK's on the way but would like to get a load for the 69 's as well. Is it possible to get bugholes with the 69 gr SMK in the 7 twist barrel? IF yes do you guys have a good starting load? I am using RP brass, have 200 Lapua on the way but would like to start with the RP brass, powder I ahve available is Varget and RL 15. Any help and advice appreciated.

I would think that 23.5 grains of varget would be good for starters.I dont have a load for rl-15.I am sure someone will chime in on that.

I'll bet they would work just fine in a 7" twist, but I will tell you that I used to shoot them out of a 6.5" twist service rifle barrel and only about 70% of them made it to the target. I would suspect that if you try to push them too hard out of a long barreled bolt gun, you may experience some of the over stabilization problems that I encountered.

You will find Sierra service rifle load data for 1 in 7 twist barrels at the link below using the 69 SMK. Be aware that the Savage rifles have longer throats than the M16/AR15 rifles have.

25.0 grains of RL-15 behind 68 Hornady's shoots extremely well in my 1n8 twiat, 26" Douglas CM barrel from CLE with their CLE match chamber. It's a little shorter throated than a Wylde chamber. 7 1/2 Rem primers. LC brass

Good Evening,

My 1-7 twist Savage loves 80 gr Berger VLD's in front of a stout load of Varget. I was high score in the last two 600 yard F/TR matches I shot in, and even won a Factory Class BR shoot at 600 yards a couple of years ago with that combo.
