Bullet sorting tool?

For more info on sorting by OAL, see Modern Advancements in Long Range Shooting vol II, chapter 3 'Bullet Trimming and Pointing', specifically pg 84-85 (sorting by OAL before pointing operations) and pg 112 (sorting by OAL in lieu of pointing).

I need to say something that a lot of people won’t like. Sort your bullets any way you want, over all length is really great (proven).
But tipping and very tight neck tension is extremely critical how it’s done.
You will deform the bullet very easily at the lead line. I have done a lot of testing in this area. I would do this with great caution.
Have a great Christmas.

Lou,

So the Bullet Genie is a new version of the Juenke bullet sorting machine? It is checking for jacket uniformity?

Any idea on the cost at this time?

Bob

This seems to be the only one that actually only measures pure bearing surface.
I can't get a response on price and availability.
Not sure exactly what you are having trouble with but the price is listed at the very bottom of the ad (retail $180). And they also have a number you can call to check on availability:
814.684.5322

I have never sorted bullets before, but on my last match, I had all my rounds loaded. (.308 with 185 Juggernauts and 43.5gr Varget). So I check them all and sorted based on Shell base to Ogive and then produced the three sets I would need for the match. I do believe it provided me with better consistency.
On my next load, I will try sorting by measuring Tail to Ogive and see what I get, or does someone have other recommendations.

only 3 things can effect base to ogive length on a seated round

first is an inconsistent curve on the ogive of the bullet. that causes the seater stem to contact the bullet in a different place on the ogive. Sorting base to ogive may help but since the comparator and the seating stem contact the ogive curve in different locations it won't be perfect. Best way to solve this is with quality bullets. berger, match kings and lapua are consistent. Hornady and nosler not so much.

second is a bad seater die or a worn press or just an inconsistent seating procedure. lots of good seater dies out there. Forster makes a really good one. i use wilson with an arbor press and my loaded rounds are always within .001.

third is your brass. inconsistent neck tension. cure? Anneal often. use whatever procedure you like to produce consistent neck tension.

What's the most important, bullet bearing surface uniformity, or uniform jump? Barlow

I believe they are both important and if I had to perform only one type of sort I would work towards a uniformed jump(meaning seating stem to ogive sort I assume). Fortunately we can sort as much as we want based on the resources we have (time, tools, etc). The order that I sort is:

Juenke (newly added step)
Bearing surface
Seating stem to ogive
Base to ogive

Recently I sorted 1200 105 Hybrids. The majority of them were within .002 in bearing surface (.007" total variation). The base to ogive was also pretty good and the seating stem to ogive were all consistent with the exception of one bullet that was .009" off from the rest of the bullets. This particular bullet measured fine using the other sort methods but showed up using Bob Green's tool.

That one bullet is the #1 reason I sort and that is to find the one or few more that are in a box that will end up in your match loads and ruin a group or score.

I've seen bearing surface variations as large as .014" in a box of 500 Bergers. That isn't the norm but it is something to check for. I did test that lot at 1000yds and the results proved to me the importance of doing a bearing surface sort.

SortEEZ is now available for pre-sale. First production units will ship in late December. The first 75 orders will get our double comparator, a $34.95 value. Free shipping in the USA.

What is SortEEZ? It is the first product that allows the precision shooter to more easily sort their bullets and document the data from the sorting session. This data can be exported as a csv file and graphed or put into a spreadsheet for further analysis. The user can create an unlimited number of sorting profiles (BTO, OAL, CBTO, bearing surface, etc) and create sessions that use these profiles to sort the bullets or loaded ammunition against. Sorting will be faster, more accurate and best of all, you now have the data for future reference.

Ever wondered how many bullets were in each bin when you sorted or how the distribution curve looks like for a given bullet type or lot#? SortEEZ is your solution.

Visit http://barrelcool.com/product/sorteez/ to order.
