Bullet Sorting, Again.......

I do multiple different sorts on bullets and it's not one of the loading prep tasks I enjoy. My biggest concern when sorting is to find the one or two bullets in a batch of 500 that is way off from the others. Anyway, this is what gets checked:

Overall length
Bearing surface
Seating stem to give
Base to ogive
Juenke or Bullet Genie

The last 6mm Bergers I sorted by .0005 but in reality was probobly getting bleed over by .005 either way. Out of 500 I ended up with 4 piles and a few straglers on either end of that which I dumpted into thier respective neghibors. Haven't sorted the 1000 Barts yet. But then my groups are 2X that of the other guy... .7" at 600 and 2" at 1000 every time wow!
I never said everytime. Those are your words.

What does the bullet Genie do for you?
What can you see with the genie that the other sorting tasks do not identify?
I find your list incredibly complete.

To the OP,
Here is the order that I prep my 183 SMK's.
1. Find the shortest bullets group from a given lot of bullets.
2. Meplat trim to the dimension -.001"
3. Point all bullets
4. Sort the lot using a Bob Green comparetor. I have three containers marked +.0015, -.0015" for bullets outside the .002" window. That 3rd pile is used for competition, all the rest are sighters/foulers and short range load development.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

It's similar to a Juenke. You would need to speak with the guy who makes them, George McDonald on specifics. Internal measurements is what it measures

Thanks guys, lots to think about. Still working on consistent gun handling so will shoot them out of the box as a base line then experiment with sorts, trim and pointing.

I will say that as a HP shooter I shot a lot SMKs straight out of the box for about 25 years with pretty good success. However, that sling target is more forgiving so who knows what I could have done with better load to rifle tuning.

When I first started shooting F-Class it was with a 308 at 600 yards. I decided to (gently) point my 175 gr SMKs. What I found that the water line was significantly shorter, sometimes by 30-40%. So I'd say some of this matters with certain bullet makers. The question becomes what steps really make a difference for my skill level. I think we tend to do things that don't matter as much as others and everyone has to make that decision for themselves.

Thanks again

mikeinct,
My question for you is how did you get your wife to measure your bullets? I guess that I need tips on how to train my spouse! Ha!
