Bullet pullers

Well, just spent money on a puller that does not work.

Needed to pull for .224 Valkryie bullets. Bought the RCBS bullet puller and a .224 collet.

Tried to get it set up so I was not grabbing the case and after 3 attemps I did get it adjusted so the collet only grabbed the bullet. after several attemps at removing the bullet they would not pull out. Checked the bullet and could see where the collet grabbed the bullet but they kept sliding out of the collet.

Tried tightening the collet as tight as I could but no dice. All it did was mark up the bullet.

No the bullets were NOT crimped..

Went back to my old trusty inertia hammer.

These bullets were Hornanady 88 ELD's and did not want to damage the jacket s I am using these for 600 yds.

Is there something I am missing???

I have use the RCBS collet bullet puller for 35 years and for my handloads I am pleased.with the performance. Sometimes it does seem excessive tightening is required. I degrease new collets, and/or bullets, before use.

I was going to recommend you clean the collet in mineral spirits and wipe the bullet with alcohol before trying to remove

Hornady camlock puller works good also.

Best idea is to seat the bullets some 20 thou deeper to break the bond between bullet and neck

I use the Hornady camlok and also have and used an inertia hammer

SOmetimes it take a little bit to set it up properly.

I use the RCBS collet puller with collets for various calibers. Previously, I used inertia pullers (RCBS AND Hornady). I'm thinking your puller is possibly not adjusted properly as my collets even grip moly coated bullets with ease and no bullet marring. Far easier with mine than with the inertia pullers as well.

#1 I pulled 800-900 old .223 with one I bought from pirate and it worked great.....

Me too!! A lot of times I’ll just waste the bullet and use pliers if I’m only pulling a bullet or two.

Seat them deeper then try again. Throw them in a fireform only bin because they are ruined- may as well use the pliers in the press with die removed so you dont mistakenly use them

Mark,sometimes with the grip-n-pull you better have a good grip and I would suggest wearing gloves.

I have had horrible luck with collet pullers as well. I have pulled hundreds (even 200 on the same day) with one inertia puller. Some foam in the bottom to protect the bullet and a tray to dump stuff into.

Dusty are you saying they won't fly anymore or do you meen the are no longer good for accuracy..? For instance like I said t pulled 8-900 fmj for .233 and they appear to be fine... Will they not be good for plinking rounds out of an iron sight AR..? I haven't loaded any since pulling them.... Accuracy for my old eyes from open sights might not be called accuracy anymore anyway...lol

You should try the hornady puller , the 8-900 rounds I pulled were from some 30 year old ammo , my father had bought so to say some were stuck would be accurate... That Hornady puller got it done easy and I didn't reseat them deeper I just pulled them... The few that slipped were really stuck but grabbing them again pulled them... I really like it and the setup is simple and it's simple to use... I don't pull alot of bullets but for that big job it was totally worth it...

Two thoughts. First the collet puller is going to work best when it grabs the bearing surface of the bullet. It will not work well when trying to grip the ogive.

Second, assuming the collet has been opened up to allow the bullet to drop out, tighten the collet up so it bottoms out on the case neck.

The Hornady is what I have. Broke one so I picked up another. I am willing to say it is me not the puller since many have success with them. Still, inertia pullers work so well for me I have no reason to pull the Hornady out of the drawer.

I've been using a grip n pull for a few years now and they work pretty slick. I don't run a whole lot of neck tension and I dip my necks in graphite so bullets pull fairly easy but it still leaves a very slight ring on the bullet. If you have a lot of pullets to pull, I don't think there would be any faster way to pull them than with the Grip-N-Pull.
