Bullet Pointing & POI

Used following technique yesterday for first time - Reamed inside of bullet meplat and then repointed with Whidden die (no trimming/no sorting). Using 6mm 105 Hybrids at 1000 yds, POI about one minute higher as compared to regular unprepped bullet heads. Wondering if this is consistent with what others have experienced. My elevation on target was good during the day.

About what I saw at the first Long Range match shot with pointed bullets. I also had three Berger Fullbores blow up during the match. That cost some points! I believe the issue was that I chose to point by feel instead of sort by over all length and then point at appropriate die settings. There were a couple of bullets that I 'crushed' a bit and I am sure I damaged them without seeing it. I now use the Whidden bullet trimmer to trim to consistent over all length and then point to consistent size. The ES of the Berger bullet lengths I have measured seems to be .008" which does not seem like much but it obviously made a difference when pointing.
Frankly I am still on the fence regarding pointing. I do it because I have the time right now to do it. If I did not have that luxury I would have no problem shooting the bullets out of the box as my scores were marginally better. Perhaps a few more shots in the X-ring but the wind was not bad for those two particular days. Time will tell.
One of the best shooters I know who always comes close to cleaning every match he participates in and shoots Bergers and Sierras out of the box. It is the launching pad, not the rocket...

Bad analogy. Most rockets are constantly "steered" along their flight. If only we could do that with bullets 8)

Think "Indian, not arrow".
