Bullet holes. Interpretation???

Was testing some powders in my PPC and Waldog this weekend and noticed some of the holes were small round and black and yet others were ragged, some even oblong????

With the Waldog, I loaded up more of the charge that made the small round and black holes and in the calm, mighty small groups but in a breeze, just went with the wind…sort of loosey goosey.

I didn’t try with the PPC

I’ll try post a few pics.

Some don’t even appear round.

So I see what I would call normal bullet holes, ragged bullet holes, oblong bullet holes, and small black bullet holes.

Most of the small holes occurred at lower velocities.

Three two sho groups out of my Waldog

I shot the Waldog in our club match Sat morning, befor the match I shot these three groups to “see” what load to start the day with.
T-1 shot a mid 3 with the lighter charge so I shot the heavier charge on the sighter…mid 2

Shot the heavier charge on a couple of targets and decided to try the lighter charge again on target 5…strung out from hell to breakfast.

So I shot the heavier charge on the sighter and it prints a small 2?

BTW

The small round group is 23.5gr N-130, middle group is 24.0gr, and bottom group in the photo on top is 24.5 gr N-130.

Most of the time, at longer ranges, I see bullet yah evident in some holes. The real bummer is deciding if it is yah or two bullets in the same holes. Looking at the back for any possible meplat exit that might be off center, counting petals, seeing distinct petals with separation can all go into explaining a target.

What you have is just ordinary differences in target and backing material and maybe a slight yaw. Look fine but what do I really know?

Target backing has a lot to do with it. I use the same box over and over again and I will just replace the front of it with a new piece of foam board when it needs it. I will see similar results to yours when I have shot the same backing a bunch and its time to replace. The groups shot over areas that already have bullet holes in them will give me holes that are more ragged vs those that are stretched tight over an area with no existing holes.

I think the best backer for the impact zone of your target is a gap and then a piece of rubber sheeting so you can see holes. This gives a true report of the bullet pass through. All the group shoots I have been to are setup like this. Anything else has the potential to give false readings. Good target paper also helps.
