Building a Yote gun

Thinking of building a yote gun over the winter and considering what cartridge. I know bolt guns are king when it comes to accuracy and that’s still a possibility but I do have a fully built AR-15 lower in the shop that has been crying out to be topped off for quite some time now. Open for your suggestions.
Dave.

Yes, A semi=auto something larger diameter ... Pick anything 243 257 6.5 I'm down w that .I'm partial to the 25 Goofy my own version of the 25/223 commercially known as the 25/45 Sharps. Horrible amount of freebore in the commercialized version avoid that reamer design. mikeinct

My AR 15 choice for a coyote would be the 6mm ARC, 18" SS Proof barrel, an aftermarket trigger about 3 lbs. I have 2.. both are capable of 5 shot groups into 1/2 " or less 1 hundred with Hornady 108 match. There is a video of a couple shooting called coyotes, with the 6 ARC standing, running, getting tripples, before the coyotes get out of the county...all the way out to 700 yds, AR 15 6MM ARC. Search ," 60 coyotes with the 6MM ARC." Thise 108 eldm bullets flatten coyotes way out there, even at 700 yds. Ya can't do what they accomplished with a bolt gun. The wife is even putting the hurt on a bunch coyotes with the 6 ARC. Definitely worth a look to see if it fits you're needs.

I’d save the lower for plinking and build yourself a nice bolt gun in a small to medium 6mm. I’ve been shooting a 6BR with 68 Avengers for some time now and it works really well. 70 Varmageddon is another good one. I like the Avenger because it shoots killer groups and doesn’t do much fur damage. It works very well on deer as well.

Look up the WTBBC and check out past results. My friend Daniel and his team have killed 63 and 66 in single nights, with bolt guns. I don’t have anything against ARs, but indeed it CAN be done with bolt guns, even in a single night.

(For the record, all 4 team members take a polygraph and all four 4 must pass with 100% accuracy. There’s just a lot of coyotes in the private oil leases out here.)

These were shot in the daytime by one guy (and a few shot by his wife with s kid in tow) on the gun, and still killed all 4 that came in in one setting a feat where an auto was definitely an advantage, especially on the run. For one guy on the gun and a wife taking the video while keeping a child entertained, he did a remarkable job. Not saying a team of guys with night vision, hunting at night couldn't beat his coyote kill count in a high coyote population area...you might do that with most any type of sufficient weapon, bolt or even a single shot, handgun, or shotgun, with a thick coyote population. I was referring to the ones that required exceptionally fast follow up or they escape, type shot at longer ranges in the daytime....no team competition at night.
I hunted coyotes years ago in the daytime, used a bolt gun in 25-06 mostly, my hunting partner used a 243 win autoloader, he had an advantage in certain conditions....not always but sometimes, with certain shots and conditions that happen in the hunting field, that fast follow up shot makes a difference, in general hunting...and that's usually an advantage. The same reason the military uses auto loaders and full auto when it's fast and furious.

I mean, I’ve killed 5 with a bolt gun on a stand. Do I get an award? ARs have a place, but a predator hunting gun should be a precise instrument. FWIW, I prefer daytime hunting. It’s much easier than night hunting, for sure.

6x45mm has my vote. Accurate, easy to load from recycled .223 brass from my non reloading buddy. I don't worry about lost fired brass in the tall grass. I have a AR15 6x45mm and shoot Seirra 80 grain #1515 Varminter bullets over 27 grains of IMR 8208XBR GREAT Combination. I have shot lots of coyotes with it.

Ya might if all 5 coyotes came in at once and ya killed em all in one setting, none got away... all done in a few seconds. Or can you put 20 shots in a 20 inch circle in 20 seconds at 1000 yards ?...done with an AR 15...and pretty impressive.
Hunt with what ever you're comfortable with, provided it's still legal. Today, here in my state No night hunting except coons & possim. No night vision, lasers, red dots, lighted reticle in scopes or devices that measure range allowed or attached to rifle or bow... only the trail cam is a legal electronic device.
No dogs or bait for bear or cougar...
Hunting is daytime only for coyotes , with non electronics in scope or non electronics in open sights with gun or bow....and mouth blown calls only. But you can have a trail cam with your original 1894 30-30 or slightly more modern gun and a orange vest....and don't lift the fish out of the water more than a foot before you release it ...that is a hefy fine. Getting worse every year...quit fishing, and hunting as the regulations are ridiculous, reporting in, doing autopsies, turning in animal parts...still buying a hunting & fishing license, just incase...I want to shoot a coyote with a legal hunting gun & sights with 5 rds or less in the center fire. Leave all electronics at home....except your phone, where you store your license. Times change, many don't want any animals killed for any reason, and they make the laws, I used to belong to tbe Varmint Hunters club, for 10 yrs, it all gone now.

+1^^ this choice makes sense in a lot of ways. And no doubt accurate enough to fit the task.

If you decide to go bolt action I'd go with either a 6XC with a 10tw barrel, or a 6br if you can make it reliably a repeater. Both are very easy to find an accurate load for. JME. WD

I've assembled ar15s in these calibers for coyote.
.223, 224 valkyrie, 6x45, 6x6.8, 6.5 grendel, and 1 ar10 in 243.
My favorite is the 6x6.8, then the 6x45 as they just drop coyote like crazy. Then you can use them on deer come that time as well.
I still use a .223 ar15 for my night calling rig though.

I thought CA was bad. What state is that ?

I was thinking about this the other day and decided on a 22 Creed. Not for any reason in particular and I know there are other, less overbore cartridges out there, but it just seemed fun.

Pairing it with a Manners LRH with mini acra rail just in front of the bottom metal for tripod setup.

Should be a good time
