Building a Yote gun

If you are going to build one make it a 22 creed. Mine shoots 75 gr eldm at 3650 FPS. I built it myself with a sammi reamer, 4 shot group had an OD of .355" at 100. I use 6mm creed SRP Lapua brass, just run it through a 22 creed sizing die and you are ready to rock.

Thinking of building a yote gun over the winter and considering what cartridge. I know bolt guns are king when it comes to accuracy and that’s still a possibility but I do have a fully built AR-15 lower in the shop that has been crying out to be topped off for quite some time now. Open for your suggestions.
Dave.

Where and how do you hunt?

If you’re calling from a fixed position during the day either an AR or a bolt would be fine.

The majority of the calls you make you’re not going to have herds of coyotes running in so build the one that you feel is going to suit you the best.

If you’re shooting at 300 yards and in, my choice would be a 12 twist 22-250 and use the 55 Berger match. 24” barrel it should be going 3750. Feeds good, lots of brass options and proven.

If you’re shouting beyond 300 yards regularly then look at a fast twist 22-250 or a 22 creed or 22-250ai. Use 75 grain something’s. Hornady or Berger.

I’ve never understood the obsession some people have with 6mm and coyotes, to each their own obviously but there isn’t an advantage to the 6mms. You’re going to have similar results with either 22s or 6mm.

AR- I have a buddy that built a 204 in an AR and it shoots very well. He’s had a few good seasons with it so far. He hunts on foot, calls exclusively and 90% of his shots are under 250 yards.

Build both!

Ya might if all 5 coyotes came in at once and ya killed em all in one setting, none got away... all done in a few seconds. Or can you put 20 shots in a 20 inch circle in 20 seconds at 1000 yards ?...done with an AR 15...and pretty impressive.
Hunt with what ever you're comfortable with, provided it's still legal. Today, here in my state No night hunting except coons & possim. No night vision, lasers, red dots, lighted reticle in scopes or devices that measure range allowed or attached to rifle or bow... only the trail cam is a legal electronic device.
No dogs or bait for bear or cougar...
Hunting is daytime only for coyotes , with non electronics in scope or non electronics in open sights with gun or bow....and mouth blown calls only. But you can have a trail cam with your original 1894 30-30 or slightly more modern gun and a orange vest....and don't lift the fish out of the water more than a foot before you release it ...that is a hefy fine. Getting worse every year...quit fishing, and hunting as the regulations are ridiculous, reporting in, doing autopsies, turning in animal parts...still buying a hunting & fishing license, just incase...I want to shoot a coyote with a legal hunting gun & sights with 5 rds or less in the center fire. Leave all electronics at home....except your phone, where you store your license. Times change, many don't want any animals killed for any reason, and they make the laws, I used to belong to tbe Varmint Hunters club, for 10 yrs, it all gone now.
Yes, all one stand and none got away.

I’ll take your word for it that a guy can put 20 shots in a 20” circle at 1,000 with an AR.

I feel bad for anybody having to live under that amount of regulation, where are you?

6 Grendel or 6 Hagar, 70 Varmageddons. 6.5 Grendel might work, but it’s awfully slow for a coyote killer.

No need to really over think it, they aren't hard to kill. I'd pick whatever caliber and platform that tickles your fancy. I have a 223 AR and a 223 bolt gun that both get the job done. The thoughts of quick repeat shots make the AR seem nice, but I find it's seldom needed.

6BR big advantage in barrel life.

Good shootin, blue state left coast, of coarse, and it gets worse every year, more and more restrictions on guns, magazines, storage of guns, all guns locked up, red flag laws in place. No gun sales without a background check. We already have much of what the feds are trying to put in place...and if ya loan out a gun to a kid or adult to go hunting it appears to be a felony as the kid ior adult is in possession of a gun not registered to him, that you gave him ....especially if the kid or adult is out of your sight on a different stand or hillside, when the game cop arrives.
So many vague laws subject to interpretation by a liberal prosecutor....it never used to be that way. Times have changed, and I've thought about leaving, but these limiting heavy gun, hunting, and fishing laws and regulations spread like a cancer. So enjoy your outdoor activities while ya can, whatever they may be, before they are declared illegal to participate in, or fees so high most can't pay to play.

For a bolt gun, you'd be hard pressed to build a better coyote whacker than the one I have listed. It covers all the bases whether you prefer fast & flat, or favor higher BC to cover the possibility of longer shots in more open terrain.

I fell into the AR hole the past couple of years, and decided on fast & flat is where I want to be for coyotes, especially at night. I have since rebuilt two new AR's this spring, both with 12" twist.

1st one in 22 DTI that shoots 52 Bergers at 3550.

The other is the 6 Hagar, shooting 65 Bergers at 3330.

I am also in the process of rebarreling one of my bolt guns into a 12" twist 22x47 Lapua, with the prospect of shooting the 52 Bergers at 3800 in an 18" tube.

I thought CA was bad. What state is that ?
The whole left coast is bad, each governor trying to outdo the other in more restrictive laws for it's citizens. If a more restrictive laws is passed in one state the other state democrats adopt it or try to out do them with even more restrictive laws. Citizens vote against certain tax laws the Attorney General implemented the tax law despite two times being voted down, as state needs the money, according to him. All the big cities on the left coast are in the top 10 in murder rates... every on made the top ten list, one closest to me has the 2nd highest murder rate in tbe United States.
And a cop arrested an eight year old girl who lives 3 doors down for going to the neighborhood park that was closed down during covid, for trespassing....police car ride home to confront the parents. Makes it hard to back the blue...what kinda cop ya gonna be? Unconstitutional tyrants, Jack booted thugs for the police state. And then they're defunded and unsupported, so the have to participate in the government plan inorder to reach retirement. Sad state of affairs, coming to all unless you resist.

Depends on what you’re loading it with. I happen to have a good supply of 6.5 85 grain Sierra’s that are plenty fast and accurate.

I want to be between 3200 and 3700 with no exit and no damage whatsoever. I don’t sell many, but I don’t like the mess either.

Of course, eye of the beholder applies.

If I had to choose only one it would be the 6 Creedmoor, hands down.. Several great coyote bullets. It works up close and as far away as you can hit them.. Bolt gun for me.
Yup that or, a 6 XC "Braked" with, a Medium Heavy, 23-24 inch Barrel and around, 9 to 10 lbs, Max.
I use mine, Sitting over Stix to 400+ and Prone past that. Mine shoot's, the 95 grain Classic Berger's @ 3,200 FPS or, 108 gr. Elite Hunters @ 3,000+ into, the .3's ( One,.. Ragged, Hole ).
But, I also like, my 16" AR with, 60 gr NBT's @ 2,800 FPS or 65 gr Sierra GK's, IF wanting, closer, fast action, shots.
The 6XC is, a TAD easier on Barrels than, the Creed. These Bigger 6's, WORK very "well", in the Winter, Winds !

I have several good coyote rifles. All Bolt action

17 TAC 30 gr Golds at 3950 fps
20 Vartarg 40 gr BIB 3400 fps
20 TAC 40 gr BIB 3835 fps
22-204 53.5 gr OMB match 3630 fps
22 Dasher 57 gr Hillbilly Boattail 3900 fps
6 BRA 68 gr Hillbilly Boattail 3759 fps

@justpassinthru Decent group, even better for a gas gun, but what’s that have to do with between 3200 and 3700 with no exit and no damage?

I notice you’re from NC, which makes our needs a lot different. Coyotes here weigh 20-30 lbs and require something fragile that’ll stay inside. Yours probably weigh 50 lbs, and require different tackle.

I said the bullet didn't exit from 80 yards.
Next time I get it out I'll put some through the chronograph but they're probably near or could be taken near the bottom end of that range.
Use whatever works for you but the little Grendel just impresses the s*it out of me every time I take it out.
Ah I see there where you came back and edited the post to include that information.

I’m glad you are enjoying the Grendel.

It’s going to take a little larger sample size than your one coyote for me to want to give up what’s been working for the last couple of decades, but as I said before…. Eye of the beholder. I’m sure it’s a dandy deer gun as well. 85s at 3,000 or so should really do a number on them, as you’ve indicated.

I’d save the lower for plinking and build yourself a nice bolt gun in a small to medium 6mm. I’ve been shooting a 6BR with 68 Avengers for some time now and it works really well. 70 Varmageddon is another good one. I like the Avenger because it shoots killer groups and doesn’t do much fur damage. It works very well on deer as well.
Nice! What are the specs on your Rifle (stock, action, barrel specs, etc.)?
