Build off of my Savage 16 .243?

OK, after looking through a few sites and doing a little research I'm now wondering about just building a gun off of my current Savage 16 .243 that I have. What I was thinking about doing was getting a 28"-30" barrel for it, possibly a Shilen replacement barrel they offer for Savages and also getting a new stock more suitable for competitive shooting and of course a new scope that would be good for 300-600 yard shooting and maybe some kind of trigger work. I could always put the stock sporter barrel and stock back on her later.

It looks to me that ballistically I'm not going to give up much with a .243 over other calibers other than barrel life.

Has anyone done a similar build? What suggestions would you make for barrels/stocks/etc.?

Thanks.

Trevor

For a stock try Stockade Stocks. If you can find a used laminate from SSS (Sharp Shooter Supply)they are good also. I would not recommend buying one from them though. You might wait 3 years to receive it.

Good quality prefit barrels (off the top of my head)
Benchmark
Pac-Nor
Criterion
Shilen
(I think Rock Creek is making prefits for Sav now)
Lothar Walther

You'll find some good reviews on McGowen and even ER shaw barrels but the QC is not up to snuff. My personal recommendation after having tried a small handful is steer clear if your looking for competitive accuracy.

The Rifle Basic II is a decent aftermarket trigger for a Savage. Advertised as going down to 4 ounces but in real life 7 ounces is about as low as you'll go without gunsmithing the action. Adjusting lower can lead to accidental misfires. Unlike the Accutrigger if it drops the sear the rifle goes bang.

Didn't mention what style of shooting you're going to do, or which action it is (stagger or centerfeed) but the Choate Ultimate Varminter stagger feed stocks can be had for $175.00-$185.00, my favorite for PD guns, with very slight work to the bottom will hold 7 rds of 223 based rounds (6 w/o working on it), some think they are ugly, but they are functional and adjustable for cheek and LOP, and I never worry about roughing them up. Aluminum V block bed, built in accessory rail. Pretty good deal if you can get over the looks.
