Has anyone actually tried this gun before? Does it work as advertised?

Me too. Never heard of a carpenter bee. There are carpenter ants in this part of the world.I sue learn a lot on this forum.
Yep, Carpenter Bees (they get the name because they winter and bore in wood to do the larvae laying) are serious pests (bigger then your typical Bumble Bee). Many moons ago I spent two days treating a house (not mine but friends) for the darn things. They had piloted holes all over (and I mean many) the outside wood siding and soffits. Seriously destructive little things for sure. Males cant sting but, the females can.Me too. Never heard of a carpenter bee. There are carpenter ants in this part of the world.
Use a yardstick, become the JediI usually use a fly swatter for the carpenter bees, fun to get out there and hit a home run.
