Check Youtube. When I looked there were dozens of examples of DIY brass catchers using PVC pipe and bulk netting to build ones small enough to fit on a bench to quite big ones 4' square or larger.

For Ar rifles, I really like the Caldwell picatinney catcher. You can get extra bases for it, and mount it to every AR you have. It is small, but it will catch my 308 brass, as well as 223, grendel, 300blk, and even 458 socom. For bolt guns, unless you are practicing the mad minute, just take them out by hand.
