BR Variant in 16" barrel?

Anybody ever load a 6BR variant in a 16" barrel?
Curious what kind of performance one would get?

Thinking about a super compact, mini PRS style rifle that might double for deer hunting for a youth.
Where I antelope hunt, if a 103gr ELD-X is launched at 2600fps, it would still carry 800ft-lbs at 550yds.

Most BR data I see is in 24-30" barrels, and I am just guessing on 16" velocity.

You would be fine. I have a 284win in a 16 inch. Theres a loss of course, but still PLENTY left.

Theres guys with 6br in custom xp100 handguns do fine

The 6BR and Dasher are outstanding in the XP100. But then again I've watched the 7BR, 284, and the 7SAUM in the XP and they also do a fine job.

I think a 16” X will get you there about as fast as a standard 6Br in a 28 or 30”

I have a 19” 6 BR truck gun that I hunt with. Running a 105 Hornady BTHP at 2600 and is a blast to shoot

I get 2700fps with a 105/108 out of 15" 6mm Dashers so I think you're right in the wheelhouse with your estimates.

257 Roberts, I shoot a 6BRA out of a 28.5" barrel with my load of 30.5 Gr's of H-4895 and 103 Vapor Trails seated .007 into the rifeling. I get a velocity of 2995 avg. fps. at 70" temp. Using Q.L. I shortened the barrel length to 16" and it projects out to 2647 fps. So you should be very close to where you want to be. Hope this helps.

With a 16 in barrel you do not need a case any larger than the parent 6br case. I think a bigger case would just be more unburned powder. How about a 6tcu, .223 necked to 6, an extremely accurate round that will work fine on deer to 200 yd.

I would run a 20", due to concussion!!! The concussion on the super short barrels is like getting hit in the head with a hammer! Children in particular are sensitive of the concussion.

For a child, a plastic stock, cut to the proper length of pull, should work very well.

Our small, young nephews started off with Rem SS model 7's in 243 Win, with a Gentry Muzzle break, and they are taught to wear Peltor electronic ear muffs. We taught them to rattle and grunt for deer on their first hunts. The electronic ear muffs added an entire new dimension on "Hearing the Hunt". 70g Nosler ballistic tips kill deer well.

I am about to chamber a 6/204 Ruger, another nephew turns 7 this year. We will try 85g Speer btsp on hogs, deer next year on a Model 7, with a stock cut super short for him. He sat in my lap this past year and wanted to shoot every wood pecker and squirrel he saw. Great time to teach him some ethics on what does not need killing.

The 6br variants dont really have much concussion from a brake. My kids have no problem shooting dasher pistols with Ross brakes on them.

The larger case you go there is velocity to be gained even in a short barrel. A Long Dasher is faster than a Dasher and a Dasher is still faster than a BR

While I like the 6 Grendel too, this is splitting hairs. The 6 BR and the Grendel are just about identical capacity, so I'd say go with whichever boltface you have.

OP: sorry to derail your thread; I don't have any experience with short 6BRs. My grandpa's 20" 30-06 that I inherited, however, is only 100fps slower than "book" values for a 24" barrel, and that's a big ol' case of powder to burn! I think you may be pleasantly surprised on how much velocity you get.

It would do the same where i hunt too. Id go with a dasher or brx just to bump it up a bit
