Box Stands for Deer Hunting

Don’t get too carried away there, I’m just a deer hunter.
I’ll finish the rest of the stand when I get caught up on work, the roof should be interesting to you guys!

Is work getting in the way of your stand building or are you like me in that turkey hunting is getting in the way?

Yep, I am impatient in waiting to see what your roof will look like. Don't really understand what you are doing in the stand3.jpg photo on the top of what appears to be the window. The picture is not very clear.

I’m sorry for the delay, but I’m caught up with spring work surge and a manufacturing project I’m trying to get lined out. The long windows are in every wall and even the door will be under the window opening. I want a 360 view as much as possible so I’m willing to crawl in for that. The roof will be a hip with around 16” overhang to keep the glass dry and takes awhile to build in a ready to install unit. The overhang shades the interior and keeps me hidden to a degree by providing a background to the opposing windows.

This project is on hold until I get some crappie and mushrooms! Lol

One key factor that will determine the structures size is if you are hunting alone or if you typically have a partner with you. I opted for a six by eight foot base because I often hunt with my son; a 4-4 footprint simply doesn't afford two people enough room to move around and have room for the 101 different items you end up bringing with you. Items such as coolers and heaters quickly take up space and leaving you with no room to move around. I opted for a slanted roof with an overhang to keep the wet weather from affecting the interior.

Remember, you're going to loose 7" of interior space, the standard thickness of walls. Items such as the style of chair that your going to use will determine the amount of space you're going to need. The style of window you're going to use will also affect the amount of space you'll need. I chose sliding windows and shelves under the windows so I had space for setting up my rifle rest. Start by making a list of things you're going to want in the stand with you, you'll quickly realize that you're going to need more space than you originally planned for. Lastly, make sure the height of the windows is optimal for shooting while your sitting. The base of the window should allow you to sit comfortably and utilize whatever type of rest you use. Again, the type of chair you end up choosing will affect the optimal window height.

heck,I got central heat and air and a refridgerator,,thinking about getting a recliner so I don't have to share with the dog..

I'm delighted that someone takes the same approach to deer hunting that I do.

I’m at the same crossroads, but then again another strategy. If I can contain my presence to these boxes and engineer them to kill from, then it’s worth it to me. For some reason I need to watch the sun come up everyday... I’d rather do it out there!

Starting my 6x6 shack this week. Setting my posts today as temps are good and frost is gone from the ground...finally. Still haven't decided on floor hatch or an under window wall door. Guess I'll figure it out as I go.

I built mine to be mobile. All steel 6'x7' with insulated walls/roof/floor. It has swing up windows, and I made magnetic screens using the same type of material used in those pop-up blinds. The tongue is detachable as are the stairs / handrails, and it has two outrigger's and two fold up adjustable jacks for leveling.
Inside is nice and cozy with wrap around overhead storage shelf, and shooting rail. A padded carpet floor, and a twin size mattress to sleep on. I have electricity also, using two deep cycle marine batteries with a solar panel charging system, along with an inverter to run my laptop, electric cooler and charge my cell phone.
