Bore Cleaners

Thought I would try one of the foaming bore cleaners that are out there. I have been hearing rave reviews about some of them but my first experience was very disappointing. I just tried the Hoppe's foaming bore cleaner AFTER a thorough cleaning with Hoppe's 9 and JB. I followed directions properly and after 3 applications, nothing could be seen on the patches. Then, the checker....applied Sweets......patches came out green/blue. My question, are all these foaming bore cleaners the same????

I've found that Bore Tech Eliminator works very well without the smell. I gave some to a couple shooters at my club to try on their "clean" barrels and you would not believe the stuff that came out after they had cleaned with whatever, including Sweet's IIRC.

+1....same results....I do use another cleaner first to try to off set the cost of Bore Tech by getting the initial junk out before Bore Tech cleans it.

As above...I tried Wipe Out brand Patch-Out after cleaning....Whoa, the patches were darker blue than my jeans! Took days of leaving the barrel soak for 8 hours then redoing. They also sell and "acellerator" that make it work quicker, I would buy that also. As so your brass jags might be giving false color not from the barrel. The barrels I used in were stock Savages and a Sako that have seen several seasons of prairie dog shooting.

if you are using the wrong jag..it will always come out green/blue
That is what we were doing. Try a plastic jag...............Wipeout is the one and Kroil liquid. I quit using brushes years ago when wipeout came out.
You can do a quick foam wait 15-30 minutes and clean. Then foam let set all night clean then Kroil. When ready to shoot again put a patch of windex or alcohol pad down the tube before firing.

We have had a lot of success with the foam cleaners - in particular Wipe Out and Gun Slick. Both do a great job with minimum fuss.

I use stainless jags to stay away from false readings from your patch. Huge fan of W/O Accelerator and Patch Out!!! nothing out there FASTER or better. have NOT used a brush in the bore in 2.5 yrs!

One thing that needs to be said, fire-cracking in the bore from repeated firings in long strings, creates tiny chasms in the bore within usually 4" of the throat. This "fire-cracking" rips at the jacket of the bullet as it passes over the "infected" area. Carbon residue also builds in those voids. This can and unfortunately does, make it difficult to really get clean. I have found, especially in my 6.5 x 284, that "JB"ing" the bore after every competition, along with using Tubbs "throat maintenance" bullets every 300-500 rounds, keeps the "sharp edges" of fire-cracking to a minimum. This makes overall cleaning considerably easier. I have also found that "TM Solution" is excellent on carbon and Montana "Copper Killer" works great, especially after fire-cracking has really set in.

What is TM solution?

It is a solvent of sorts, I have used it with good success, after reading one of these threads. It is water soluble, and the manufacturer says you can use bronze brushes.

I am happy with the stuff, but I use aluminum jags, and have no bore scope, so who knows... :-\

The best bore cleaner on the market is Warthog 1134 for copper or carbon...... While most have to soak to get them clean,i'm done in less 15 min. , but Hazmat is killing it....... jim

I realize a bore scope is not within everyone's budget but they are a great tool. I invested in one several years ago and use it for everything, including checking my cleaning routine. I know when to go after carbon, copper and when the bore is clean enough. Bores do not have to be sparkling like many think. I use the Wipe Out products and Bore Tech products a majority of the time.

Purchase a good Stainless Steel barrel like a Krieger, Shilen, or Bartlein, and all you'll need is a couple of patches of Butch's Bore Shine and a couple of patches of J-B. A good barrel solves a lot of problems.

Even top of the line custom barrels will foul if the cartridge is overbore and pushed very hard. There are no "free rides" when going with the high velocity rounds. Some powders are harder on barrels as well.

Kg-1 is supposedly for carbon but it kills copper also. Somebody did a test a while back by putting a bullet in a jar filled with different solvents and measured (by weighing the bullet) how much copper came off the bullets every hour. Kg 1/12 and WipeOut plus accelerator blew every other major cleaner out of the water. They disolved more copper in 30 minutes than others did in two days.

I think you will find Warthog 1134 did that bullet test, the bullet weighed 3 grain less after soaking in the solvent. The others were way less to none.....jim

In my opinion barrel cleaning should be divided into two separate discussions, and it should be made clear from the start which is being discussed, factory barrels, or quality lapped barrels. I feel it is not an exaggeration to say that once you have experienced what an excellent barrel will do, both shooting and cleaning, your interest in factory barrels will markedly decrease. This is not to say that I do not own and enjoy factory rifles, but rather that I encourage everyone to try a top barrel at least once. I think that it will change your perspective. IMO it is far better to own one really good rifle, than half a dozen that are not.
