Bolt Lift Kit by Grimstod - Ben Chappell

Maybe they haven't thought about it!! You have, but not willing to share. Doesn't do much to help other shooter's .
I just did share it! Im not legal to do this kind of stuff for others. I have done many things in an attempt to help my savages be more better. Like making cocking pieces that have a tighter tolerance in the hole for the cocking piece pin to keep it from tilting.

Heres another improvement. Works almost exactly like your mod.

That looks like a flat face Dusty. But it might work "almost" as good as the factory piece. Don't be a troll!

Like Rusty's design the ball set screw offers a small point of contact in the center. However it will not dig in like a pointed set screw.

The brilliant designers at Savage years ago designed a cocking piece that is for all purposes a 7/16" thin wall tube. That tube face has to rotate under firing pin spring pressure 90* against the flat face of the Bolt Assembly Screw(BAS). The effort to rotate the bolt is reduced by moving the friction from the 7/16 diameter to the center. Like a top spinning on a point compared to spinning a glass on the mouth. The stack height does increase the spring pressure, so cutting the BAS back .187 +or- to compensate for the Cocking Piece Cap and ball end or point end set screw is the desired method so you maintain the factory .250"-.275" cocking distance without increasing spring pressure. All this so you can go from a 10lb bolt lift to a 5 or 6 pound bolt lift.

It is no question Savages are cheap ugly open tolerance actions. But they have a high percentage of being good shooters so people buy them.

I agree Chet but Fred's services are iffy at best. Sometimes good sometimes not. Sometimes a month sometimes 2 years.

My bolt lift kit works quite similar to the one PTG offers. However I eliminated the moving parts in the BAS because I can make a few strategic cuts here and there to get the kit to fit each bolt perfectly and provide the greatest amount of reduction to the lift of the bolt. Bushing the bolt in conjunction with the lift kit gives the best results.

2001 F 250 with over 200,000 miles, been in the shop 3 times,,#1 ignition coil, #2 complete checkup before moving to Texas, #3 fuel pump, I guess that is alright
for a 17 year old truck.

Where I live, winter road salt would rot Ford trucks faster than any other vehicle on the road. Thus why Ford decided to at least make the body out of aluminum. I honestly wish cars didn't have a single piece of ferrous steel on them.

What are you waiting for? Contact Grimstod he'll do you right.

I sent Ben a p m for shipping and cost / payment information. He has already replied, it will be off to him shortly. If this one works out as well as expected I'll be sending others.

It’s easy to get easy bolt lift on a savage
All you have to do is give up lock time on the firing pin .
Had that done by a savage builder
Savagedasher
Could you expand on that please.
This is a topic of great interest for myself and others
Thx

Today I rose a little early (2am) and did some bolts. Two were brand new, both bushed and lift kit installed. Both started with a bolt lift of 6lbs and once finished had a bolt lift of 4.25lbs. Firing pin spring kept above 21lbs and they were bushed to a .062 hole. I also had one customer send me a bolt that had a bolt lift kit such as is found elsewhere. I did my own tuneup on it as he was not satisfied with it. It started with a 5lbs lift with a plain bolt lift kit. After some modifications similar to the ones I install I was able to get it down to 4.25lbs.

I measure bolt lift on a dry fired bolt in one of my receivers on hand. I have a jig I put over the bolt handle that allows me to lift up using a trigger poundage scale to get a reading.

Is 4.25 lbs your target weight for primary extraction?
How does that compare to custom actions?

I kinda thought they did it for fuel mileage.

They did it for money! This is the honest truth...My adopted sister had some knucklehead side swipe her in her 2017 Ford. She was able to drive it home. But, her insurance company paid a little over $14K to fix her aluminum truck!!

I have a Bordan action I can test to compare tonight. I think its heavier though but that is just on memory.

Ben: I look forward to hearing what you've found compared to the Borden. I have two Savage Precision Target Actions done by Fred (Sharp Shooters Supply) and those actions have lift effort reduced about as the same amount you get (approx 30%) which I happen to measure the same way you do. I have never measured bolt lift force on any custom actions but have compared several different premium customs (BAT, Borden, Surgeon and Curtis come to mind) side by side with my PTA's at matches and I really can't tell any difference.
