I'm primarily a hard core Country & Western guy. Songs have to have drinking, cheating, Momma, pickup trucks or trains. There hasn't been a decent C&W song since 1965. Don't even talk about the stuff that's put out now. Billy Joe Shaver's "Ragged Old Truck" being an exception. It can be called a "blues" song.

Having said that,

It's hard to beat Big Momma Thornton. She was the first to record "Hound Dog". Then some guy named Elvis got hold of it. She also wrote "Ball and Chain". Some say for Janis Joplin (best take was at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival). Etta James had some success with it also.

Got to give Momma's take of "Gonna Leave You" a try.

Some may disagree, but Richard Wagner could be considered a blues writer. Give "Tristan und Isolde" a chance (

). Rest up before tackling it. Bring snacks and beverages, it's over 4 hours long.

Don't forget "Apocalypse Now" with Robert Duvall. The background music for the helicopter attack is from Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries". One of the helicopter pilots is none other than R. Lee ("The Gunny") Ermy.

Its amazing how you can tie all of this together. Especially with some Wild Turkey.
