Blue dot loads

Does anyone here still play w reduced blue dot loads in small calibers ? If so, what do you shoot? I’m curious if anyone can share experience. I’m all ears.

I do.............223 only. One rifle, a Winchester Featherweight, using the Hornady 50 gr SPSX likes 13.5 grains --the other rifle, a Rem 788 likes the same bullet with 14 grains.
Fun shooting these.

I use the dot powders in a lot of rifle play loads. Also for fouling shots for after a deep bore clean.

I can't find Bluedot, but Titegroup seems to work really well. I have done a few in .223 and .300BO. I tested a a 90 grain XTP pistol bullet for silent Raccoon night hunting at night. I have shot it both subsonic and so far up to 1400 fps, and it's accurate. I have used it in .223 also. I plan on testing .222 and .22H when I get the time to do so. I'm using an H&R single shot .300BO, so it feeds. It's not going to give you low sd numbers, but if you want a plinker, or a quiet varmint load, it works well, and is in stock.

I have one 223 prairie dog rifle set up to shoot strictly BD loads with 40's & 55's..

12 grains of BD with the 40 grain Vmax gets 2900.

13 1/2 grains of BD with 55 grain Hornady SP's get 2750.

This is in a a cut down & threaded 20" factory 700 Varmint barrel.

The beauty of both loads is they have identical drops to 500 yards, if I care to stretch them that far.

I've also used Titegroup in 223 with 52 grain speer hollow points. 10 grains gets me mid 2500s.

I shoot blue dot loads out of 22br, 223, and 260 rem. They are all very accurate, very quiet and low recoil. I am currently shooting a lot of blue dot in my CZ 527 in 223 with the 53 vmax suppressed. With 12.6 grains, I am getting 2750 fps and better than .3" groups at 100 yards. No need for hearing pro with this setup. Shot about 50 or so pdogs with that load this spring with the long at 550 or so. Good kills out to 350-400 and then it doesn't expand much.

I was shooting the 53 vmax out of the 22br with great results. Tried the 62 eldvt with blue dot briefly and it did not work well, probably because it is too slow of twist rate.

I am shooting the 105 sierra blitzkings out of the 260 rem. I am at mid 2800 velocity, but would have to check my notes for the charge and exact velocity. I use these on windy days when the slower 223 gets blown around. I am still on my first brass loading and accuracy is very good, I expect it to get a little better after forming of the brass. Hit several 500-600 shots regularly with this setup.

I've used 7.0 to 9.0 gr of Greendot under 40gr and 50gr vmax in 223 cases. I've run them out of my bolt gun (Savage model 12) and an AR. They won't cycle an AR and run somewhere in the 1900 to 2200 fps range. They sound like a 22 mag rimfire. I get sub moa out of them, with some groups approaching 1/2 moa. I've used them on prairie dogs out to about 200 yds (my alternative to buying a 22 hornet), but my main reason for them was dispatching groundhogs and coons in the back yard. The vmax rounds will exit a ground hog, but they have already fragmented/splattered at that point. I've shot groundhogs from 50 yds that were within 5' of my neighbors barn. Occasionally I'll find a piece of a jacket just barely sticking into the old wooden sill plate/beam. Never anything more than that. On PDs, you don't get a lot of arial acrobatics, but the loads will still put them down pretty hard out to about 125 yds. Beyond 150 yds it acts more like a standard 22rf. I normally use this load when we're walking across the prairie, shooting as we go. Plop the tripod down, take 4 or 5 shots, pick up and move 50 to 75 yds and repeat.

Last Cpl years I’ve been trying to gather as much info as I can. I’d like to replace the 22 mag w a real bolt action rifle 222/223. longer shots in the hardwoods for squirrel head shots and rabbit walk abouts is what I had in mind.

222...4 grains Unique with a 40 grain Hornet bullet. Excellent tree squirrel load. This load was promoted by Don Lewis, gun writer in the 70's in PA Game News. I still have the article.
