Blue Copper Color coming off my Montana Jag

I just realized while trying to clean all the copper out of my rifle with wipe-out foam spray cleaner, that blue color is coming off the Montana jag... so I'm not sure now if the barrel is free from copper or the jag is lying to me...LOL.

At first I thought this is not possible, so I cleaned the jag with denatured alcohol and wiped it off clean.... then sprayed some wipe-out bore foam cleaner on it, and after 10 mins, the jag turned the cotton rag to a beautiful blue.

I even tried a one size smaller caliber nylon brush wrapped with a cotton patch as a make shift jag, but the wire holding the bristles also turned the patch blue.

Is it possible that this Wipe-Out Foam Cleaner is that strong?

It's not only Wipe-Out that will cause your jag to give a "false positive" for copper, most copper cleaners will cause the same results.

If you are interested, they do make jags that will not react with copper cleaners.

Bore-tech Proof Positive jags. I just looked up a link and they showed an alloy that has a brass color. I would swear that my aluminum jags are BT proof positive jags? I'll have to check but I have aluminum ones with a stainless rod as a brass fitting on your rod end will also leach copper and give a false indication.

I have seen and used both nickel plated and aluminum jags and use an Ivy stainless steel rod. The jags ae widely available. No false results.

nickel plated and aluminum jags

Man O Man... what good information... wish I had known this before I wasted money on brass fittings. Isn't this a known problem across the industry...??? If not.... then why not?????

Mr. Brothers-

Don't lose any sleep over it. Copper fouling on lead .22 rounds is at a minimum. Same with lead fouling with centerfires except those who actually cast their own bullets.

I first learned of the miracle jags three years ago, so you are not alone wallowing in the ignorance sty. I had the same issue, no matter how many wet patches I used, same aqua color. I inquired at the range and was told to purchase every known copper cleaner and use the rod until my hands cramped or purchase a few aluminum or nickel plated jags. While being not the smartest guy in the world, I was acute enough to go the jag route.

Bore-Tech Copper Cleaner? I don't think it is ammonia based...?

Try it again. It worked for me.

BTW- There are scads of manufacturers making nylon brushes. I can't remember the last time I used a bronze brush on something other than a .22 rimfire.
