Parker-Hale cleaning jag

ebb,
You are correct. Its just a piece of garden hose to keep the jag from exiting the crown.

So Joe, do you withdraw the patch out through the breech then?

I push everything one direction only (out the muzzle) and I want the patch to exit the muzzle (one time) and fall off the jag. The only time I would want to prevent a patch exiting the muzzle would be if I was lapping a bore (which I haven't done). Even when I use a brush I push it out the muzzle, unscrew the brush, withdraw the bare rod, reattach the brush, repeat.

Brian,
I've learned that barrel cleaning methods among shooters, is like a religion, everyone thinks theirs is better than all the others. I happen to feel that just like scrubbing pans, going in both directions works really well for me. Here's a video I took a couple of days ago of my 7SAUM with 1,262 rounds through it.

You are very observant, let me know what you think of it.

Kindest regards,

Joe

Joe,

I don't know what to think of that video. Maybe it's my eyes, but I can't see the lands and grooves clearly enough. I also have one of those look-ahead snake cameras, they are very useful for certain tasks (including inspecting inside hollow guitar bodies). To inspect the bore, I use my Lyman side-view, but I can't create a video, just still pics.

I hope I never implied my method is the only proper approach! But I was under the impression many if not most chaps eschewed pulling crud back towards the chamber, and (with a bronze brush anyway) reversing brush direction in the bore.

It's not hard to do on a Hardinge HLV-H.

Hi Guys,
I'm resurrecting this thread because I asked Charliemac if he would make me a couple of the jags and he did. Well, I've been using them for about 3 weeks and they are everything I had hoped it for an more.

Now when I clean my rifle I don't have to wonder how much of the blue copper stain is from the jag and how much is from the copper in the barrel. The answer is simple: all of it is from the copper in the barrel. I highly recommend them.

Kindest regards,

Joe

Anyone know how much smaller the Parker hale jags are to the bore size?

My .30 cal jag is about .248. It's a bit hard to measure because it's "spikey".

One possible substitute for a P-H jag is a smaller diameter cleaning brush, whatever material is appropriate.

The parker hale jag works great for me short stroking the throat to remove carbon fouling.

I too wish they made one that didn't turn my patches blue. I just ignore it during this phase of cleaning.

I guess I will experiment a bit.
Thanks again
