Blown away by air rifle consistency

I just bought the excellent Garmin Xero chrono, (my other two kinds are going to gather dust), and I had to try clocking my RWS 48 (spring powered) air rifle. I shot three times in the backyard, and the consistency of velocity blew my mind. No wonder they are so accurate!

Noticed the same on my Garmin with my rws 350 n-tec. The velocities were super consistent, within 10fps ES most of the time. Most SD were under 5.

When shooting 10 meter bench rest with our Daisy Avanti single stroke pneumatics (CMP surplus) withpeep sights, we found that we had a problem in that we were getting too many perfect scores on the AR 5/10 target. Extending the range to 12 meters helped somewhat, but we could still expect 2 to 4 perfect targets out of 8 shooters. I will say that pellet selection was was important, but those Lothar-Walther barrels were amazing.

They are amazing. In my experience the majic number is 800 fps. Try some pellets like the 10.33 Air Arms or other 10.0 to 11.0 gr domes. I think you might get a pleasant surprise in accuracy.I read the 48 is now out of production, a shame.

I've read a number of reports where a springer exhibited superior velocity uniformity vs 22lr, surprising indeed. Makes me remember I wish I had not loaned my rws54 to my brother in law.......

Take it back. I have a Diana 54 in .22 I shoot out to 100yds with. Lots of fun. I can shoot 5 shot groups approaching an inch. I will get that 5 shot inch or under this summer.

I have an RWS 54 and an RWS 48. Both are mad accurate. The 54 is likely a tad more accurate with the 10.2gr domes

Well I would hope that you would not feel compelled to cary 3 seperate chronographs to the range. That said it is never bad to have a spare. Might consider selling one and keeping one. depending on how long they sit electronics can often go bad. I am guessing this would not be the case with the devices you likely own because they are likely all surface mount board but it is something to keep in mind. Often sitting unused is harder on electronics than regular use is baring extremes in heat. Electrolytic capacitors, old film caps technology and mica caps all conspire to do electronics in!

Even cheap break open air rifles are super consistent, accurate and powerful. Not in the realm with modern hunting air rifles in .22 and larger. I had a .22 Air Rifle in the 1980's that I used to harvest rabbits, squirels, and varmints.

The problem with a lot of air rifles is one of terrible triggers and chewing up affordable optics! I am not a trigger chaser so that is not an issue for me.
