Black coyote

Out here, I'd be thinking, "OH CRAP!! I just killed Skippy!" jd
I’m not gonna lie. I have killed a couple that made my heart sink seeing the colors of them walking up on wondering if you did indeed do the unthinkable. I’ll post another picture. You won’t believe what this coyote looked like.

Be interesting to have it genetics tested to see if it's a cross breed or all coyote. The white spot on the chest makes me think it's a mix.
Looks like it mixed with a Border Collie (CoyDog)
I had a 50/50 Wolf Border Collie mix that looked rather similar

Yeah both look like coydog/mix to me, I've read there's lots back east but being out west never seen any or any coyotes that were anything other than as expected. Most of what I read about coydog was they were quite a bit bigger and there's genetic testing on some to back up the mix, but again zero experience with them personally. I'd never have shot either of these in daylight unless they were chasing livestock or something similar, just would have thought someone's dog was out and about.

Maybe it's good to weed those out of the genepool looking so much like a family pet

Totally agree, but only if I was pretty darn sure it was not domestic. Hard to tell from pics, I'm guessing seeing them live they likely have a gate and movements like a coyote vs a dog. Donno since never seen one, maybe someone can get some video before poking holes in it.

They would def act different than a domestic dog, if you use the proper call, it will help distinguish .by the way it moves or comes in right?
I seen what looked like a dark/black shepherd on the side of the highway once, miles from town
When I got closer I noticed it was picking at a roadkill, was quite large like a Shepherd too
But once I got close it definitely acted wild and took off, took cover and monitored my motions.
Dogs don't act that way.
------------------------------
One other tip, if it wags it's tail, it's domestic

Liking this…. if it wags it's tail, it's domestic, lol
Wolves and coyotes let their tail hang down low
A Domestic dog will wag or even curl its tail
I believe it is an emotional response
Wild animals have no emotions toward humans
If anything, it may PUFF it's tail like a cat if its pissed off
-------------------------
I own several wolves and can confirm, My high content female
Has never once wagged her tail, it always hangs down low, one way to phenotype the percentage
===============
The lower mid content animals, will wag or curl their tail
-------------------------
Meaning, the closer they are to 100% wild, the less they use their tail to communicate with humans
IE: Wolves don't wag their tail, I have never seen a Coyote do so neither.
-------------------------
Watch Wolves and Coyotes on Documentaries in the wild and notice the position of their tails
It will be Such as pictured here
