bipod vs front rest

i currently use a harris bipod
for the new build in the foundation stock i have been thinking of a henry rimple bipod or a front rest
i have looked at the protector rest as a starter type

just curious why one over the other.

I bought a Sinclair front rest and worked with it a whole bunch. I’m comfortable saying that unless you’re using a flat forend as on a Benchrest stock, you’re unlikely to see any improvement in accuracy, you may even see a loss.

I recently sold my rest as I could shoot any of my hunting or Varmint rifles as well or better off of a Harris bipod, which despite its modest cost is still my favorite bipod.

I do shoot with a piece of carpet under the forend, and have a couple of nice rabbit ear rear bags.

Henry Rempel makes great bipods. With a good rear bag and stock with a fairly straight toe they make a real stable platform! Whether you you want a rest or bipod depends on what your doing.

What distance are you planning to shoot?

Stability and tracking lead to increased accuracy. A front rest coupled with a quality rear bag facilitates increased stability and tracking of the rifle. That intern leads to increased accuracy. Even a quality F Class bipod cannot match the stability and tracking you can get from quality F Class rest and rear bag.

The real question you should be asking is what is appropriate for your application. I'd want a quality rest for F Open. I would want a quality bipod like an Atlas or a GGG for PRS. I'd want the same or a pair of shooting sticks for Varmint hunting. I'd want shooting sticks or a good sling for field hunting up to mid sized game. I'd want a big fricking gun and fast feet for dangerous game.

Nothing wrong with a Harris bipod you understand but they do not compare to higher quality options. Kind of like a Wallmart budget rifle with a Simmons scope compared to a Browning or Tikka or other higher end rifle fitted with a Leupold or Nightforce.

thanks, shooting will be off a bench 99% of the time.
this is my first custom rifle, and i want to try and get as much out of it as i can
this is the build, i did go with a foundation genisis 2 and the tenmile 5-50

For Benchrest competition I use my JJ rest and 15 pound rear bag.
For fun and casual shooting I use my Atlas or Harris bipod mainly because I’m to lazy to haul around and setup the heavy rest and bag. I use a light squeeze bag with the bipod.

I've got a 5-50 Tenmile. I love it. That scope will go toe to toe with the Nightforce Comp and perhaps even best it in some cases (such as color rendition). All of those sub 1000 dollar actions should perform as well. I know my Solus does.

i do 500yds most of the time, but do want to go further
I do have several shooter that I shoot with both 600 and 1000 yds that use a bipod. Some shoot prone and some shoot bench.

Most of then are not using a Harris type of bi-Pod. They use a joystick bi-pod. Kinda looks like the

MYSTIC PRECISION BIPOD MPOD

As mentioned above and ones that look like it but have a joystick to adjust elevation and windage easily from shot to shot.

Also if you wish to stay in the $250-$300 range you can look at the Caldwell, https://www.caldwellshooting.com/rests/shooting-rests/fire-control-front-rest/746884.html#start=1

I have been using this for about 3 years now and it works good from prone and bench rest.

You can get a good front fit by removing (or adding) some of the filler to get a snug fit on your stock.

When shooting off a bench, I much prefer a front rest with elevation and windage control and it's not even close. A front rest with a good rear bag help to remove human error, especially when I'm doing load development work and shooting for groups. A bipod with a squeeze bag are ok, but does not have the finesse in control like a front rest.

Also, with a bipod you need a good one for it to work well. On hard surfaces, the cheaper ones tend to studder and bounce under recoil which can cause the barrel to jump slightly. However, I do use a bipod if I'm on the ground, prone. Which is why I also love an Arca rail...I can remove or install my bipod in a few seconds to transition to/from a front rest.

Get the Rempel or an equivalent, you bury the rear in a good bag and tweak the front for elevation. Doesn't get any better, wide and stable. At our local 1000 yard steel plate matches either bench or prone probably 80% or more have switched to a Henry Rempel.

I personally like it a LOT better than a Phoenix, the Tier One is nice but lighter and a tad smaller. It's not a good choice for PRS/NRL types of competitions due to its size, next time you see a shooter using one at a match ask if you can try it.

I have found the Sinclair bipod to be nearly as stable as using a front bag (as opposed to a competition type front rest). I much prefer it to any of the Harris/tactical type bipods.

It has Alot to do with preference like almost anything shooting... I keep bipods on my rifles but carry a cheap front rest and bag in the trunk of the car , depending on how I feel that day is what I use.... The front rest to me is more stable but the bipod is all ways there attached to the rifle and easier to setup fast.... After owning both I put at least a cheap bipod on every rifle I shoot regularly.... It's easy enough to take off.... I seriously need to buy a decent front rest and rear bag.... Was shooting alot of pistol for awhile and the last three years it been shotgun sports , that alone is an expensive rabbit hole but almost anything shooting will be.... Here's my advice , if you enjoy shooting rifle and do it alot buy a nice front rest and rear bag setup and keep your bipods also.... You will enjoy them both....

It looks like you're building a PRS gun. Are you going to do PRS competitions at all?

I'd probably go with a AccuTac, Atlas, CkyePod to play in those games.

If you're not going to do PRS stuff, then I'd prefer a good front rest.

To me its not one or the other. I have nice bipods and right now a cowan rest while I wait for my Seb.

But it's more about which one do I use for which activity.
