Best way to trap

A ground hog! I have a live trap and was probably going to put a apple or two inside the trap close to the hole. Any better known ways or ideas?

Peanut butter on apple slices...mike in ct..edit: put the slices on a water dampened half paper plate..

Howdy!

If you have one of them " live " traps, I'd like to share the following...

My dear Mother once trapped a live GH, and asked me to empty the trap.

I went over to find an angry, snapping marmot; which was no surprise.

Upon grabbing my handgun while reaching for the trap door, the GH suddenly lunged; while still inside the trap. The animal moved so fast, I was unable to distinctly make out his escape manuvre.

Whatever it was he did, he managed to defeat both of the traps built-in containment features.
I was non-plused upon being confronted by the animal; that confrontation being a surprise !

While he apparently was adequately motivated to extricate himself from the trap.... I fer sher was !!

My point:
Best gitchersef' a good live trap.

On one has asked, so I will. Why?

A local school has several on the property. My daughters softball coach asked if I could get rid of them. I would love to set up on the front entrance of the school and take a few out. I think at this point in time in our country I would be on MSNBC by 10pm! The coach said he would'nt tell!!!

Interesting that this thread popped up...my wife used to think I could do anything. We have a large indoor and an outdoor riding ring {it's for her, I don't mess with horses. In fact, if every horse on this earth evaporated tomorrow I would be very happy!!!}. For some strange reason woodchucks will dig a tunnel under the wall and come out in the indoor ring. The problem is the hole it leaves in the floor is dangerous to the horse and riders. I am clueless why, there is nothing in the riding ring for them.
Several of her fellow "horse idiots" have offered extremely useless "all ya gotta do" type advice to catch them. None of which has worked of course. I have plenty of live traps, I have tried just about all of the above mentioned baits...but have not caught a single woodchuck yet. In fact, there isn't even any evidence they have tried to go in the traps.
I really don't have time to sit in a ground blind with a bow or gun and wait for one to commit suicide.
When the live traps failed I even tried foot traps. Just like for fox, I riddled sand over the traps so they could not be detected. All I can say is woodchucks must have x-ray vision, because for two weeks there were fresh tracks stepping around the traps at two different holes!!!
I don't believe a word any horse idiot says and they all seem to be democrats, but I believe you guys...well, most of you....anyone out there actually seriously caught a woodchuck in a trap and how did you do it???? Unfortunately Conibears are out of the question at this location, unless I can get a horse to stick his head in one!!!!!
It sure seems like trapping woodchucks is right up there with using tomato juice on skunk pi$$....it don't work.

If the idea is to just get rid of them, use the gas bombs. Trapping can be frustrating. I trapped a squirrel, hit him with a shot of fluorescent paint, took him a mile straight back from the house and the next day, he was hanging off our bird feeder.

Couldn't agree more that live traps are useless to control chucks. They can be quickly removed with body grip traps and a bit of Yankee ingenuity. Now as far as all horse people being Democrats, I'm guessing that you are talking show horse people? Real horse people that I know are common sense thinking Conservatives. :)

Yep, you guessed it....specifically dressage. That said, I don't know where you live buddy, but you thoroughly lost me with that "common sense" thing!!! When you involve horses there can be no common sense to it. I always say you drop 50 points off your I.Q. just buying one.

Gas bombs??? might be the same rig....the local John Deere dealer used to sell this set up with a plate you put over the hole and fill it with propane to suffocate the woodchuck. We had some local farmers years ago dump gasoline down the hole {the propane rig was too expensive for these guys} and get back and strike a match. They apparently didn't get back far enough, the saturated chuck comes out of the hole in the form of a fireball and climbs up one guys leg. The other one tries to "put out the fire" and they both nearly died. They at least did in fact kill the hog.
