Best used optic $400 range

I bought a savage vlp 223 for my dad to get him into shooting rifles more. Plan on shooting a 100 yard benchrest match once a month. Just for fun nothing serious. I know this question is subjective due to the optic being used and sellers asking different prices for the same optic. But with everyone's experience what would be the best optic for $400 range, not dead set on fixed or variable. Just looking for suggestions.

You will get a lot more bang for the buck with a fixed. I'd look for a Leupold or Weaver in 24 to 36x for 100yd BR and general use.

Check out the SWFA SS in 20 fixed. I'm using it for 1000 yard silhouette on a .308 Rem. Can not complain about this scope. Got the scope, rings & sun shade for just over $400 shipped.

The Weaver T series scopes are a great value. Decent optical quality, nice turrets, and 1/8 MOA adjustment capability. I sold mine because our range has terrible mirage and the 36X was too much past 200 yards. On the rare days I could use it at 300yd the bullet holes and writing on the targets was clear. I don't think you will do better for a 100yd scope for the price.

Leupold 36x if you can find one in your price range.
Weaver T36 if you can't.
Burris 8-32 is an option if you might use the rifle for something other than benchrest.
