Best round for 450 accuracy?

So we're finally getting a decent range locally. There was a lot of talk about it going out to 600 yards but it looks like 450 is all that we're going to get. This won't include sanctioned matches at 300 etc, just a place to shoot as far out as 450, and therefore 90% of shooting will be done at 450.

Not looking for anything esoteric, do not want to do any fireforming.

The 6mm BR is leading the pack at the moment, it's supposed to be accurate as hell to 600, so 450 should be no problem.

At the same time the 6mm BR doesn't have the fps to buck the wind as well as other rounds.

The 7mm-08 is a lot of carteridge for paper but should be easy as pie to load for.

On the other end of the spectrum the .223/22BR has the velocity to reach out to 450 very quickly.

Accurate at 450 yards, easy to load for, easy to get components for etc. Thoughts?

6BR or 6.5x47 Lapua if you want a better ballistics. For 450 yards just flip a coin, you can't go wrong with either.

Thanks Erik, that's about what I was thinking- there doesn't seem to be one dominate cartridge for this execution.

6BR would be my choice for 500 and under. Get the new Lapua brass, insert 450 CCI primers, some powder and bullet of your choice and its all up the driver.

What are the usual wind conditions like where you live? If it is one of those calm honey holes I always hear about, the best caliber will be different to what is suited at somewhere like Trentham range in New Zealand for example.

450 leaves a lot of choices which is good for you! I would look at ease of loading(6mm BR mentioned earlier and my favorite .308 Winchester) and cost of components. I find my choice of calibers dictated by available Lapua brass and A-Max bullets! ;)

Pretty windy actually. I'm in southwest Iowa, USA. Lots of rolling hills here, along with wide open farm land, patches of forrest and decent sized lakes that wreak havoc with trying to judge wind speed/direction.

The range we're shooting at now only goes to 200 yards and we have three very distinct wind "zones" between the line and targets.

The .308 is a stellar round no doubt, but for this excersise the 7mm-08 is as big as I am considering, and even that is pretty overkill.

I would have to vote for a 1:9 6BR, I've got my a$$ handed to me by these at that distance, plus they seem to love ust about anything you send down the tube.

If my own range was limited to 450yds, I would pick a 6BR 9". I am building one of these soon for 300-500yd shoots in calm conditions.
My range is usualy fairly calm and not too difficult though.
If it was a tricky, windy range, I would go for something bigger like a Dasher (my current short range gun) or 6.5x47.

Thanks Erik- what do you think it is about the 6br that gives it a better reputation for accuracy than the 6.5x47?

So do you think that we're going to start seeing the 6br eclipsed by the 6.5? If so when/how?

Yes, because of more versatility. It will happen on 7/16/2014 at 11:23 AM. ;D

It depends on the discipline that you shoot. Some shooters in F-Class use a 6BR but switch to a 6.5 or 7mm of some kind when the winds get up. But shooters that only have one rifle will be better off with a 6.5mm than a 6mm

What about 260 Win?
If you like 7mm-08, and the obvious good choice of 6.5mm pills, you could do worse.

Thanks for all the great replies.

You guys have really touched on my problem There are a lot of really good carteridges that would be effective. Right now I'm looking atthe 6br, the 6.5x47 and the 260.
