Hope it is OK for a still relatively new member to seek advice and education here. I have purchased several guns from members of the forum, and a couple of them are Remington 700s or clones (e.g., Defiance Rebel) barreled actions where another person purchased the nice stock before I purchased the rest of the gun. So now I need to find some stocks.
What advice would you give on buying a stock with the following requirements:
1. Must free float even a Heavy Barrel profile (1.25" at the muzzle) for maximum options in future barrel selection
2. good pillar bedding of course
3. if other features and quality are close (if not quite equal), less expensive is certainly nice
4. of course, I want the stock to help achieve the best possible accuracy, but I am completely open to materials and style, I have found and enjoyed fairly accurate guns with all sorts of different stocks, from metal chassis, to flat 3" wide bench rest, to HS Precision polymer/fiberglass (?), to more traditional wood or laminate
5. one rifle is a single shot, but the other does have bottom metal and will need to allow for a magazine.
I have learned a lot from just lurking in the shadows in this forum for years as a non-member, but I hoping some of you that have been down this stock road a few times may share some of your wisdom with me (and the many others who may later read your replies).
Thank you,
Clay
