best load for 75's out of a 6mm remington

I shot a hot load of IMR 4064 and a fed 210 primer, 75g Sierra made a mess out of a coyote, very, very accurate at 3600 fps.
You CAN find a great load with 4064. It does really well but it's a little on the fast side. I'm a giant advocate for IMR 4064 but for the masses either 4350 is a good bet for everyday loads. The 4064 is a little specialized, hits hard and fast but you have to really pay attention

In the many 243's and 6 Remingtons, I found that IMR 4064 had a very predictable and consistent pressure curve. Varget on the other hand will be producing flat primers one round, and blow the primer completely out of the case on the next round. I never blew a primer with IMR 4064.

I started using IMR 4350 with the 85g and heavier bullets. I shot many, many thousands of 85g BTHP with 38.5g of H4895 with fed 210 on p. dogs and Rock Chucks...hits like a hammer. Around 37.8g of IMR 4064 produced incredible accuracy with the 85 Sierra BTHP and 87g Hornady bthp at 3100.

With the 85 and 87's, R#19 with a fed 215 in win brass is 3300-3350 fps with accuracy.

6 Remington with 80g Sierra blitz bt with R#19, 215's are at 3600 fps out of a 26",12 T Shilen.

My reamer was ground with .015 freebore, started off shooting the 60g-62g-70-75g bullets. As the leade grew out, I went to the 80g Sierra, 12T barrels. 12T would stabalize the 90g Speer which is one heck of a deer and antelope bullet.

The 6mm Rem AI is a serious upgrade from the 6 Remington, if you are so inclined. I shot the 70g noslers at 4100 out of a 26", 14T Shilen, with .015 freebore reamer. 80g Sierra loves 3800 with the same barrel with R#19, Win and Rem brass.

Just fishing to see if you guys have a preferred powder for the standard 6mm remington. It is a shilen select match barrel on a savage long action, centerfeed. The twist is 1 in 12. Any help is appreciated. Jon

Reduce load 15% to start
Remington 700 BDL 26" barrel 53.5 grain reloader 19, 75 grain Hornady VMAX moly, clocked 10 feet from barrel 3,905 average over 10 rounds. Prints 1 1/16" at 300 yards vaporizes any varmint it hits and has removed the base of skull from 2 deer.

This post has been going on for awhile and answers some of my questions. I had some success with H380 and Reloader 17 in my 6mm Rem (with Douglas 26", 1 in 12 twist, heavy barrel), but nothing like I used to get 50 years ago when I was shooting Hercules Reloader 21. H414 did not do well for me. Hercules Reloader 21 powder with 75 gr Sierra HP would consistently shoot half inch, one-hole groups, and I just shot up the last of my old handloads and they still performed great. Thus I'm in search of a new powder that will do as good in my rifle. Does anyone know what current powders would be very similar to the old Hercules Reloader 21?

Relative to my question of a replacement powder for my very old Hercules Reloder 21 load, I contacted Alliant Reloading to get their suggestion of the best powder to try in my 6mm Remington with 75 gr. bullets. Below is the response I received which I found very informative:

Of the propellants listed by Sierra VI Reloading Manual (Reloder-15, Reloder-16 and Reloder-17), I would lean to the Reloder-16.

The Reloder-17 is a good propellant, but it is the only Reloder series propellant that does not have a de-coppering agent. All of the other in this series have the de-coppering agent. The reason I am pushing the Reloder-16 is I have had great success with it in a 300 WSM. This is one of our temp stable propellants, meaning Reloder-16 will have relatively consistent velocities across temperature regimes. My experience in the 300WSM, good velocities, extremely excellent standard deviations on velocity (between 2-3 FPS) and a group that is essentially one hole for five shots. I like Reloder-16.

So, Reloder 16 will be added to my trials in my 6mm Rem. Now, just hoping I can get my hands on some, as of late powders seem to be in short supply in my area.

My 10 twist 6mm Rem & 6mm AI do very well with RL-16 with lighter bullets. RL-16 has all the right stuff for zippy 75 gr. loads in the 6mm Rem - fills case well, temp change resistant, copper fouling control, and meters relatively well for an extruded powder. For my 8 twist 6mm Rem, I use RL-23 with 105's.

Alliant Power Pro 4000 has shown some promise but needs more work. PP 4000 is relatively cheap and available and works very well in the .243 Win and should work well in the 6mm Rem. PP 4000, a ball powder, is sort of like RL 19 in burn rate.

The 244/6mm Remington has only one flaw......bad marketing back in the ‘50’s.

The initial intention was to neck down the 7mm Mauser, attach a 1-12 twist barrel, and have a killer Varmint cartridge.

But deer hunters found that the 1-12 would not stabilize the 100+ grn game bullets.

In the mean time, Winchester Necked down the 308 and created the 243, and put it in a 1-9 twist. Deer hunters loved it.

Remington then brought out their case in 1-9 twist, renamed it the 6mm Remington. But the damage had been done. The 243 ruled the day.

But Remington Got back at Winchester in the early ‘60’s. When the 264 Winchester Mag sort of flopped, (Winchester used extra long test barrels to get non realistic field velocities), Remington did it right with the 7mm Remington Mag.

The rest is history.
