Best factory Rifle

For a Varmint/Target Rifle I would go with the Cooper. You can pick them up used at cosiderable savings if your willing to wait for the right deal.

I started reading this post and Shaner's title is 'Best factory rifle". Well, thats a VERY large catagory. I assume that because he's looking at Savage and Tikka that money is a bit of an issue. Savages can and do shoot well, how- I have no idea since one look with a bore scope would scare he begeezes outta anyone! I do own both makes and they both are ok for the money.
I also own 2 Weatherby Vanguards that are both VERY accurate to 300+ and the best deal for the money IMO, if your looking for value.
IF your wanting the 'Best factory Rifle' Shaner, um.. no offence but you need to get the wallet out bro. Sako,Blaser,Weatherby Accumark,CZ,Kimber, the list goes on... :o

My "New Varmit Rig" which is a Savage BVSS 223 the bullets are always touching each other with factory Hornady ammo. This gun is un-real!!

Factory rifle is a broad term. If you want to spend your money for a rifle built by a company that is listening to it's customers and tailoring their products towards what the customer wants, then yes, you should be looking at the "Semi-Custom" SAVAGE rifles. Just joking, kind of. Savage has a lot to offer with their line up. You can buy a rifle from them to start you out in any form of rifle shooting you are looking to do. They give you some options on barrel twist for caliber, RBLP actions, stock preference, and more. They may not be pretty, so if that is what you are looking for over pay for another brand, but if you want something to shoot small targets at long distance, pretty hard to beat a Savage. These days anyway. And yes I have shot The other brands excluding a Blaser, I think they are beautiful pieces and would like to try one some day. I just shoot rifles for fun with a couple of friends and hunt a little bit so I am not a seasoned veteran benchrest competitor although I really wish there was a place around to try it.

I know that price wise the 2 Sako A7's might be the exception (Brand new 7-08 stainless $628, 270 WSM Stainless $598) bothe bought from Supohunter on Gunbroker. I could not have bought a Savage stainless for that! Savage was what I started out after, but the Sako is light years ahead of the Savage on fit, machining, and I still get 3/4" groups easy with both A7's.

Untill Savage refines their machine work a little more, I will only pick them up if I can get a steal on them as long as I can find higher qulity rifles for the same price as they want for new savages.

300 WSM A7 for $598 brand new!

We have bought 7 from him. That shows you how much the markup has to be.....

I'm not sure why you could'nt buy a Savage stainless sporter for the same price or less?

I agree with Joe, Savage sporters are reasonably priced. As for accuracy, my 6BR 12F is shooting .7-.9 five-shot groups at 300 yards. That is a factory Savage barrel.

Sako fit and finish is well known but it is hard to poke holes in Savage accuracy. If you need a rifle that will perform, a Savage will do the job. If aesthetics are a factor, they are a little lacking in the looks department. There is, however, beauty in function.

Sorry I bin gone for a bit . Anyway thank's for all the reply's. Sound's like alot of people favor savage. I am a guy with expensive taste an I like the cooper's/sako's kimber's. But Im thinkin around the $1000 range and I still got to get a decent scope for it. Who know's I might just save up and get a fine quality gun buy something once and have it for life. That's what I did for my shotgun I bought the new Browning Citori 625 O/U What a nice gun so happy with that purchess. Thank's again an take care everyone.

The Browning Abolt TARGET model is worth a look, available in blued or stainless.
Is 1:8.5 twist in 223 with a ton of features for a reasonable price. I especially like the set trigger. This model was introduced in 2008 (aimed at F class I suspect). Mine has around 150 rounds through it so far and it is very satisfactory. My reloads give me under 1/2 moa groups using a 32x cheapo scope. I am confident to get some 1/4 moa five shot groups with a better scope and better wind doping. The heat from 30 round strings has not been enough to move the point of impact. It would be a mistake to overlook this gun because it is a Browning.

Sako TRG 22 308 win, straight out the box I shoot to 1000 yards it works. No replacement stock, trigger, barrel, no gunsmiths time or wait for voodoo magic special. Badger ordnance 20 moa Picatiny rail and rings Shimidt & Bender 5-25x56 PMII. It works. We Scots are frugal with our cash.
Never was a standard Sako or Tika fan for several reasons, I think Savage are giving some bang for your bucks.
That's a Scottish European living in New Zealand's opinion. ;D

Shot this 4 shot group today with my "New Varmit Rig" Savage BVSS .223, Hornady 55 gr. V-Max, factory ammo @ 200yds. I'm so happy with this gun. 40 rds thru barrel so far.

allot of great guns mentioned. We have had alot of luck with our factory Savages. The .223 is a great rig with the Hornady 52 A-max. We filmed mostly an entire Woodchuck huntig video with them. I would look for a 1-9 twist like the LRPV to launch the heavy 75 A-max to really get out there and hit hard.

Good Luck

Don't get a Browning Abolt Target, it is too hard to count how many shots went into the group !

An other surprising accurate factory rifle I have had is a 223 cal Bushmaster Predator heavy factory fluted barrel factory target trigger all touching at 100 yards. My friends and I were amazed at the performance of this semi auto. This was with a bit of experimenting with home loads I was also using 55 gr I think they were speer soft points purchased 500 in a plastic bag. An amazing wee rifle until I saw a trophy Fallow at 350 yards across on an other mountain decided more fire power was required got me a 7mm wsm Browning Mountain Ti for my hunting rifle I await my Nikon 4-16x50 Tactical which looks a good package for a light weight mountain rifle. I digress the 223 cal Bushmaster Predator with some time spent on home loads was really amazing. ;D. I still like the Savage you can even change your own barrels.

Been following all this and unless I missed something why have we given up on Remington?

To elaborate, I was looking a month ago at the web site of an Ontario gun dealer under "used rifles". All of a sudden 5 Rem 700 VSSF appeared in the different chamberings all with Leupold scopes. Seems some guy collected them and never shot them. They were "mint". He needed the money and took them in to the dealer who gave him "wholesale". Phoned the dealer and said "hold the Swift". Bombed up there and paid $1200.00 for a $2000.00 combo.

I have made a Range Report on the .220 Swift and the VSSF in a separate thread. Have shot many Savages and would say the VSSF is the equal of any if loaded properly, excellent trigger. The stock is 3rd party, synthetic cast around an aluminum block. The action is bedded on the block. I believe Rem started doing this before Savage and their AccuStock.

To be totally honest, the only contrary opinions I have on the VSSF Swift is its slow twist and longish throat. Other than that it is a tack driver.

Tikka and Sako make the most consistently accurate factory rifles I have ever used. Savage can be great too, but Tikka has a butter smooth action, and accurate non-fouling barrels. I just can't stand that goofy Savage trigger and its clunky action.

We have a very competitive Factory Class here in Birmingham, Alabama, at the Steel City Sports Shooting Association, and the rifles that are performing the best right now are the discontinued XR100 in 223. Last weekend the winning rifle in Factory Class shot two five-shot groups in the .2s. He ending up agging in the high 3s, and his first groups was in the .6s because he had a rest malfunction. If you can find one of these rifles, they shoot exceedingly well.

Cannot believe what I'm reading regarding "performance" at distance. 1000 yard shooting? This range of shooting is only performed by an elite FEW. ARs are best kept to 200 yards, especially for animal shooting. ARs generally have 16" or so short barrels. Those ARs with 22" plus barrels are decidedly more accurate shooters. Twists of 12'' to 9" are best for truly-designed varmint bullets. 8" to 7" twisters are best as people-destroyers with 69 to 77 grain bullets designed for the specific purpose. .224" diameter is a tight-nich'e caliber, where careful bullet selection makes a tremendous difference in performance. LOOK how many times the military has experimented and changed bullet weights and rifling twists. .223 Remington is truly rocket science regarding finding what's right, and what actually works WELL for a specific purpose. I discover new applications ONLY through handloading, and it's a neverending effort. Cliffy

p.s. Ruger Model 77 Mark II Sporter in 22" barrel with 1-in-12" twist with 55 grain bullets is a perfect combo to 300 yards regarding varmint shooting. The scope selected makes or breaks the deal. A six hundred dollar rifle deserves a six hundred dollar scope, since a two hundred dollar scope won't cut-it accuracywise. Cliffy, after going through five scopes to find one that excels.

I Have Howa varminters in 204 and 223, You can buy the howa barreled action, a stock of your choice, timney trigger, bases and mounts for the same price as a new "put together" howa. I liked my 204 so much that i bought a 223 howa and it is a tack driver as well. both have shot quite a few .5 and smaller groups.
