Best 22-250 rifle

I have a Browning ABolt in 22-250 with the boss muzzle break and it is a consistent half to 3/4 moa. It has a slow twist so light bullets only but I have had great performance on coyote. Mind you I am also in New York our coyotes get a bit bigger then the western states.

IMO, factory rifles in 22-250 leave a lot to be desired, relative to the potential of the cartridge. The barrels tend to be too short and the twist too slow. My advice is to look for a factory rifle with a 9 twist and a 26" barrel. Something with a barrel nut setup (like a Savage) could be desirable for a person handy enough to change their own barrel.

In this chambering, it isn't hard to justify a build. Pick the bullet(s) you want to shoot, choose your twist, barrel length, and contour. Then go one step further and make it an AI.

I once had a savage model 112 in 22-250 with a laminated stock. Not the bvss model but a varmint blued long action model gun. Nothing fancy, non accutrigger from around the early 90s. That gun was a tack driver. Shot anything from 40s- 55s superbly. Left absolutely nothing to be desired where accuracy was concerned. No, it wasn't anything fancy or custom but it did shoot. Not sure why but I pulled the barrel and sold the stock. Used the action for another gun. I miss that gun for the light bullets. Not sure how the newest savages shoot but that was a special gun

Savage rifles in 22-250 have had 12 twist barrels as the standard twist for a long time. Savage was also one of the first to offer a 9 twist in 22-250. The 12 twist offers significant improvement over the 14 twist that is the general standard, while 9 twist is even better.

With today's powders and bullets, 14 twist in 22-250 is ridiculously obsolete. Unfortunately, most factory 22-250's have a 14 twist. I wish more manufacturers would follow Savage's lead, relative to rifling twists.

I understand some of your bigger coyotes also hold elected offices there, as well as here. I know, that's off track.

Kelbly's will build a guy a good 22-250.

hi Benchracer
you got that right, my savage model 12bvss in 22 250 that i purchased 20yrs ago has a 12 twist, the light bullets were not making consistent trips over 600yds, the days of 12 twist in the 22 250 is on it's way out, about 10-12 yrs ago i went to a 9 twist in a 223, with today ballistic software, shooting the 75 Amax with Varget, i have connected on ground hogs at distances over 600yds longest was 711yds, no more 55gr, they do not have the energy out there.

Most of the 22/250's that I have owned have been Rem 700's for varmints. The SPS stainless that I have now is bedded in a Walnut stock and it shoots bug holes, bbl freefloated, with a walker trigger.

I tend to call in coyotes and shoot crows so 300 yds is a long shot. The 14 Twist stabilizes the 55g nosler ballistic tips very well, and Win 760 does very well at 3750, so does Varget.

For very, very messed up coyotes, the 55g Sierra lead tip blitz with a dose of H4895 or IMR 4064 just absolutely splatters them all over the bushes...accuracy node is in the area of 3550...you will not be putting them in the back of the truck.

Two ways to sort the 22/250 thing out, varmint and benchrest. They were shooting 1/2" groups with the 22/250 at 200 yds in benchrest matches in the 1950's.

Today, Forster dies, Lapua brass, good bedding materials, Jewel 1 lb or less triggers will make Rem 700 sporters shoot very tiny groups.

Nosler 55g ballistic tips and the 55g Nosler combined technonlogy bullets rock the world in a Rem 700 14T at 3750+...don't let anyone blow smoke up your ying yang.

In my mind the best 22-250 is the one the widow of my long-term enemy brings over and gives to me saying "I know he treated you badly for years, i hope this makes up for it".

Besides, our OP has not been back since he posted this

I had a tikka t3 22 250 1@14 . I traded it for a TC venture 22 250 1@12. Best thing I ever did. I like the 1@12. I like the clip in TC too. My TC shoot great too. I ended up buying another TC made a 22 250AI out of it. Look at Ruger they have a 22 250 with a 1@10. But u couldn't go wrong with Rem (Savage hate the trigger) but shoots good how's. I shoot a 52gr nd 55gr Berger hp on coyote. I use 223 in bolt and ar15 rifle too on them. Cheaper too shoot.

If I wasn't shooting F-T/R with a .223R I would go with the new .22 Nosler. On paper it looks like a great round and should be able to push those 90gr VLDs & SMKs with a very useful MV.

Buy a new or used rifle for about $800-1200 throw the factory barrel away and install a $600-700 new custom barrel chambered by a good gunsmith.
Tikka with Tupperware stock did 1/2" at 400 with an old firefirming load using 55 ballistic tip. Totally random, but.....Oh, and second-hand 300 bucks

Seems like we're all responding to a boneyard thread, but those Tikkas do shoot! Of course, I suspect they use the same barrel making equipment as Sako so they should. Picked up a used T3 Varmint in 22-250 for my son earlier this year. He cleaned it up, bought an old Burris Sig. 4.5-15 from a local guy, bought a box of the white box Winchester USA 45 gr. ammo and sighted it in. Here's how it did:

Not bad at all for $700 all in.

Here's a 5-shot 100 yard group from a Tikka T3 223 varmint my friend owns:

My 222 sporter weight 222 shoots around 1/2 inch at 100 yards. There does seem to be a trend here!
