Best 22-250 rifle

Back to basics.

How much do you want to spend?
What kind of "varmint" hunting will you be doing?
Are you or will you be a handloader or is it all for factory ammo?
What ARE your accuracy requirements, or do you even know?

The original question is too vague for a reasonable answer.

I picked up a older used Remington VS at a gun shop years ago that was like new and a very low round count for $475.00 , Its a little on the heavy side with the remington varmit barrel . Shot H-380 powder and nosler 50 gr bullets and was very pleased with the 1/2" or better groups at 100 yards and its performance on coyotes.

What bullets do you want to shoot? Some 22-250's are still twisted 1 in 14 and are limited to shorter, lighter bullets. If you may want to shoot 60gr or heavier longer bullets, look beyond the 1 in 14 barrels to something with a faster twist rate.

Hello I just joined and looking for a good varmint 22-250 rifle. What does everyone recommend?
Well this one fits my idea of a good varmint 22/250. I had it built a few years ago and it has numerous rockchucks. PD's and coyotes to its credit.
Cooper model 54 (repeater), 22/250, custom contour barrel about the equivalent of what is often referred to as a magnum contour, 1-12 twist, handles and shoots great. Leupold VX-2 6-18x40mm scope, Warne bases, Burris Signature Zee rings (when the pic was made it had high rings it is now outfitted with mediums).

It shoots pretty well - 5 shot group at 100 yds

But a 223 will kill coyotes just as well.
Cooper model 21 Classic, 223, 1-10 twist, 40 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips. But the coyote didn't know if it was hit by a 22/250 or a 223 it never moved out of its tracks, if you look at the rock just under it you will see a blood spot. It was shot at just slightly over 300 yds.

It shoots pretty good too although this is only a 3 shot group at 100 yds.

But I also have a Remington stainless SPS sporter 22/250 that lives in my truck and it kills stuff too. So it all depends on how much you want to spend, what feels right to you, what your style of hunting is, and the rifles ability to hit what you are aiming for at longer ranges. Handle as many different rifles as you can before you put your money down, the heavy barrel that is great off of bags can be a pig if you want a walking varminter, if you are not a walking varminter then a heavy rifle can be great for stationary shooting.
I can tell you this though I shoot my 223's at many more shots than I shoot my 22/250's. Why because the 223 is easier on the barrels. easier to hit with (for me), if you are not a reloader there is an abundance of very good affordable ammo for 223's. Just some things for you to think about.

Drover... what load(s) were you using in those two targets?

22/250 - 35.3 gr H4895 / 50 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip .005 off lands / Lapua brass

223 - 26.3 gr VV-133 / 40 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip .003 off lands / LC brass

Disclaimer - Both loads are at the upper end of the load manual and are safe in my rifles but work up from 10% below in yours.

My bestest most favorite varminting 22-250 is a Sav 12 BVSS-S got restocked and converted to a 6BR ;) Eventually got tired of 22-250 burning out barrels in 1200 shots and brass in 3-4 loads.
Yes. I hear you. I try to not let mine get too hot but even at that I see the accuracy start to drop significantly around 1500 and by 2000 rds they no longer have acceptable accuracy. I have been toying with the idea of having the Cooper 54 rebarreled to 6BR but haven't committed yet.

Remington 700 varmints shoot very well in 22-250 or .223. My most accurate 22-250 was a Savage 112V single shot. It would crowd 5 shots in a single ragged hole at 100 yards. My most accurate .223 is a Remington 788 unaltered. It also shoots bug holes. My favorite varmint gun is a Ruger 77/22 kHornet. It is good out to 300 yards on coyotes when fed 40 gr Hornady vmax using Hodgdon LilGun.

There you have it, all great choices with only one thing separating the group...COST. Figure out your budget and pull the trigger, figuratively and literally. Good luck.

I can't say what is best. But I can tell you my experience. I bought a Savage model 12 right bolt and right port. I loaded 50 gr Vmax's with IMR 3031 and shot the "chit" out of it. The bbl finally gave up and I purchased a replacement barrel from Shilen. I put a rifle Basix replacement trigger on it and I'm now using Varget. If I had to start all over.. I'd probably build a rifle from a Savage PTA 18182..
Just my $0.02..

If you get a Savage, WHEN you burn out the barrel, you can screw in a premium barrel of your choice in a couple of minutes! I understand the 3/8" group from the Coop[er will slay far more varmints than a 5/8" group from the factory Savage barrel, but oh well. And yes I realize the Cooper is an heirloom rifle, but you can but a Savage and a lower end Nightforce scope for the cost of the Cooper. That A7 looks like a heck of a buy.

I do everything I need with 223 Rem, 6mm Rem, and 250 Ackley Improved. My hunting buddy departed this world a year ago, and bequeathed me his Rem XR-100 in 22-250. Having helped him develop loads for it, it is very accurate, but as I said there's no slot for it in my already full stable. And while the Boyds laminated thumbhole stock is nice, I don't like thumbholes since I do a lot of walkabout hunting, not just stationary PD or squirrel shooting, or coyote calling. So I think I'll sell this sentimental XR-100 to someone looking for a solid 22-250.

I am happy with my Remington 700 VLS in .22-250. All it needed was to bed the action, float the barrel and install a Timney Calvin Elite trigger and it shoots great.
