Best cartridge for shooting in wind.

All of the Amax bullets have a very long bearing surface for their given weight when compared to offerings by other brands. I would be willing to bet if you switched to a different 140gr bullet from Berger, or Sierra, that you would be able to get up to your desired velocity.
Thank you. I think I'll try that.

I dislike hunting rifles that have a brake. So I'd pick a fast 7. 7STW, 7RUM, or 28nosler. 7RM if you don't handload.

If you wish to run a brake, that brings in the big boys: 338rum, lapua, edge, norma etc...

If you are serious about elk. Bull elk, nothing smaller then 7mm.....bigger is better. Bullet design is an issue when going after thick skinned heavy game. The smaller bullets are to frangable for elk, especially bulls. I've taken a fair amount of youth hunters to the woods with a "light recoiling" rig. Many were darn good shooters and hit where they aimed, bullets came apart too soon. You get the picture....
To answer your question, a 7RSAUM, 7RM, 300 short mag, 30-06AI or. 300WM will all launch a 180 gr. 500 BC bullet near 3000fps. CW

What's your chamber neck size compared to the diameter of your loaded rounds? Lapua brass is thick.....if your neck is tight, you may be dealing with not enough clearance for bullet release. Turn some of the Lapua necks down a couple thou or try some Win or REM brass. That'll tell you pretty quick if you have a clearance problem.

Pain or pleasure ? That's the question your posing. The 338 will provide all the pain you need BUT give the ultimate results for long range wind. Beats you up and shoots five dollar bills with each trigger pull. The 26-28 calibers are a pleasure to shoot and are decently priced to boot. They will also provide very respectable wind results. It's all up too what your willing to put up with. I love the 284 and believe it's the best balance of all. My shooting buddy loves the 30 Cal's. Preference is as important as anything.

Am I the only one that thinks he's trying to accomplish to much with one gun? You need to decide what's most important. I wouldn't want to take a large caliber gun capable of dropping an elk at distance to the range and shoot 150 rounds at paper or chucks for many reasons. If you see a chuck other 150 where is that bullet going to go after impact? Also, many larger calibers that we consider good in the wind don't offer good barrel life. Recoil will also be a lot for paper punching. Just my 2 cents.

First rule; bring enough gun. That said, avoid overkill.

It's a question of the right bullet construction combined with a method of delivering it ontarget.

I like the Accu-Bonds for effective terminal performance in a bullet that can conserve energy out to the longer distances.

As suggested above, the 280 Rem would be my choice as a good balance between energy delivery and tolerable recoil.

It's not a matter of manning up, it's a matter of being able to practice with the rifle and load enough to accurately predict its performance under the various circumstances of employment. Overly stiff recoil is both discouraging and exhausting over extended courses of fire.

If you want the absolute most effective cartridge in the wind - that would be a laser bore sighter. No wind reading required, however the effectiveness on deer and elk may be not so good.

Bigger and heavier with high BC is better in the wind. Just depends on how much recoil you want to handle or how much muzzle blast you want to deal with using a brake.

140gr Berger VLDs out of a fast 6.5mm round do just fine in the wind.

But anything can be accurate in the wind if you practice enough and know how to make your wind calls correctly. I've shot gophers at 125-130 yards fairly consistently with a heavy barrel bolt action 22lr in 20+ mph crosswinds once I figured out the drift.
That's amazing

.270 Winchester and read the wind .
Some nice Reply !
It’s not the Arrow it’s the Indian…….
Yes I am a shooter 567 Yard Elk Kill off my Knee two shoots .270 150gr. Speer Hot Core .
Jack would have been Happy .

The ones with the highest BC and fastest MV...

My vote is any 7mm mags with 180s between 3000-3100. The ballistics and recoil with this are very hard to beat for its size. Sure you can out do it a tad with a super big 30/338, but at the cost of way more recoil, powder consumption, bullet cost, etc.

I've killed several elk between 800-1150 yards with a 7 mag and 162g amaxs or 180g eldms. Does just fine.

I am going to recommend a 7mm magnum cartrige that can push the highest BC bullets that you can get in a hunting construction. Hammer, Bonded, Ballistic tipped.

The recoil for spotting shots at distance it crucial to me. I want to get back on target asap to determine if the shot was good.

Bigger, heavier, faster helps in the wind, that being said, the best cartridge for the wind is the one your the most familiar with. Doesn’t do any good to have a bigger faster cartridge if you don’t know it.

wind = practice practice practice.

I was shooting a 300 NMI, 7 Saum, 7PRC and 6.5 PRC yesterday at 525, 775, 950 and 1420, the dope and wind holds were definitely less with the 300 and 230gr Hybrids. I know my Saum better and was more on point with it but give me some more time with 300NMI and I’m guessing I’ll surpass that Saum at 1000 plus.
