best cartridge up to 400 yards

You probably won't see a 300 wsm at the super shoot, but at a 1000 yards a .308 win gives up 17" to a .243 pushing hybrids at a average speed.. My guess is a .30 br gives up much much more and your wind reading skills better be perfect.. The six BR family of bullets with a 8 twist or 7.5 don't give up much on either end of the spectrum (except barrel life).. You need to way your interests

Not sure out to 400 but out to 300 6PPC is very accurate, and .250 moa is very realistic if you learn how tune. But of course I am referring to range with wind flags.

How much does a 30br or ppc give up 400 yards and beyond? I bet it is much more then what a 6 br family of cartridges gives up @ 100-200.. The OP was on the fence about factory vs custom guns and I think that would have to weigh in there also..

I believe the largest hurdle in this debate is what the OP is gonna end up shooting primarily

I´ll probably choose 223 Rem for starters so I can buy factory rifle with relatively cheap ammo and good barrel life, then I´ll see what next. But if I decide to buy custom gun I´d want something for mid to long range shooting so 6mm or 6.5mm caliber would be supposedly better.

You're entitled to your opinion. I can tell you from score match results that the 6mm just can't match the 30's unless the wind is howling. At the Bud Pryor Memorial IBS match 100-200-300 with around 40 competitors there was ONE 6mm and all the rest 30's. Groundhog matches at 200-300-400 and the top six are all 30's. First 6 Dasher was 7th place and the chap shooting it is very, very good. Results don't lie.

I think your 100% correct, my thought is how many 30br's place 7th in 1k BR? My suggestion was for an OP that hasn't decided on a set competition or madness..

You will LOVE the .223! Its one of my favorite rifles to shoot. I have a 8 twist Bartlein barrel finished at 23" and I shoot 75 grain Amax bullets out to 600 yards with great accuracy. I enjoy shooting my .223 the most out of all my rifles! Try out the Federal Gold Medal Match ammo first.

Here is the rifle. Just a trued Remington 700 SA, Manners T4 stock, Bartlein 5r 8 twist barrel finished @ 23", Jewell trigger and topped with a F1 Nightforce 3.5-15 MLR2.0
