Best Bullet Weight for Whitetail In 6.5 Creedmoor

I shoot the old reliable Hornady 129 spire point and Sierra 130 gr HPBT Gameking out of my daughters 260, of which the creedmore is a ballistic clone. Those Sierra's have been unobtainable for the last few years. Sierra 120 gr Prohunters have worked very well for many years in it as well.

120 grn sierra prohunters and 140 grn eld x I used 120 grn pro hunters in a7mm 08 and they are deer thumper in pa

Before I started this thread, I emailed Nosler and asked what bullet weight for their Ballistic Tip they recommended for my hunting environment (close range Whitetail in the Pennsylvania woods). I asked 120 or 140 in a 6.5 Creedmoor. This was their reply that I received yesterday.

"I like the 140gr bullets since more weight in that caliber tend to go deeper in the animal and keep a straight path inside after contact. The 120gr bullets will do it well, but I always lean towards heavier bullets in every caliber if the rifle will shoot them accurately."

Bullet Placement (accuracy) is much more important than the size and speed of the bullet.
My Dad who grew up on in rural North Dakota in the early 1900's told me he killed
many more deer with a 22 rifle by creeping up on laying deer as a boy and shooting them
between the eyes than most city dwellers with the 30 30's, 30 06's and 270's. He had 8 other kids and his parents in the family that had to eat.
Many deer have fallen to a well placed .222 and I killed one with a 22 250 at 200 yards
with a neck shot. Dropped, didn't kick or wiggle at all.
On the other hand, I've heard stories of gut shot deer with 300 Win Mags that ran
and were never found.
Suggest going out and target shooting with your rifle and the various bullets you are considering, and find out which is the most accurate in your rifle that you would be
confident with for a well placed shot at the distances you will be shooting in the farthest,
the nearest and in between.
Good Luck

White tail deer are not difficult to kill, they are thin skinned and not dangerous game.

The best bullet is a big game designed bullet that you can place in the vital area of the deer. Don't anguish over this - it's not necessary.

No anguish here. Just thought I'd share what Nosler had to say.
Didn't mean to come across offensive but I've hunted the PA Woods for 50 years and trust me, the deer will not know the difference between a 120 or 140 grain bullet as long as both are designed for big game. There are tons of deer taken with 100 grain 243 Win. in PA in the "big woods" where shots are under 150 yards or so.

I have taking 13 deer here in north western Pennsylvania and Southwestern New York with my 6.5 x 284 shooting nothing but 100 grain Barnes TTSX Bullets. Shots have been between say 40 yards and just a little over100. A couple of them took a few leaps and bounds, perhaps 10 to 20 yards and that is it. The rest have dropped in their tracks. I know some poo-poo the solid copper bullet.I know when I feel dress the deer the vitals are essentially unrecognizable.Another bonus, while using this particular bullet is an exit hole. It’s really never been needed but may come in handy at some point. If I was shooting out to 400 yards or more, I would probably use something along the lines of a 130 or 140 grain ballistic tip style bullet. Just as in real estate it’s all about location location location!!!

I'm working up a load using the Nosler Ballistic Tip Hunter for whitetail hunting in Central Pennsylvania woods. Most shots will be under 100 yards, but may have the occasional shot out to 300 yards. Powder is H4350. I see a lot of guys on the web recommending the 120 gr BT, but nothing mentioned about the 140 BT, even though the 140 has a better BC. I've always thought the heavier bullet in the same bullet model will provide more stopping power. I'm new to hunting, so any advice will be appreciated.
A 125gr Nosler Partition will kill a Deer.

A few years ago, I took a 6.5 to South Africa and we shot around 25 animals including a couple kudu, a blue wildebeest (poor man's buffalo). Everything dropped at the shot with Federal Gold Medal loaded with the Berger 130 OTM. The PH's were very impressed. I didn't have time to load and this ammo shot exceptionally well in my little Sako A7

your 140's will work just fine
I shoot 143 ELD-X out of mine but you don't need to
any bullet in the 120 gr weight should work fine
it's about placement if you can put your shots where you want them your half way there
