Best bang for the buck target/varmint scope

Looking for scope options to shoot local informal comps and pds out to 300-400 yards.

Obviously don't need a br set-up, would prefer something variable with max power in the 18-24 range.

Any and all ideas welcome, Matt.

I have a Sightron II 6.5-20x42 and like it a little better than my older Leupold of the same magnification.

I would also recommend taking a look at the Clearidge Ultra XP line.

They are a grat scope for the money. They are really hard to beat for the money.

Although I lust after a Sightron SIII 8-32 scope, my little SII 6-24X44 is not a "good scope for the money," it is simply a "GOOD SCOPE."

Thanks for the replies. Two nods to the Sightrons, thats good to know. Anyone have any experience with the Bushnell Elite series, I've heard good things about them as well.

I had good luck with a new Nikon Monarch 5-20x44 on a .223. I liked it so much I bought a second one. MidSouth used to have them for about $420.

I also have a Sightron SII 6-24x42 and it too is a great scope. Paid about $400 a couple years ago from Bear Basin. I can't decide if I like this scope better than the Nikons to be honest. I think the Nikons are brighter, but I like the reticle on the Sightron better.

I also have a Burris Fullfield 4.5-14x40 and really like it. Not quite enough magnification for what you are talking about, but for an mid range scope it is bright and clear.

I don't have a Bushnell Elite, but wouldn't hesitate to buy one. A friend on another forum wouldn't buy anything else.

There are so many good choices these days, it is hard to go wrong with any of them.

mattri,

I have a 4 1/2-30X50 Bushnell 6500 Elite. When compared side by side with a NightForce 12-42X56 with both on 30X I could not tell which is sharper. We were comparing from about 100 yards out to about a mile.

I have this scope as well.I like it.Prices have gone up in the past month or so.Buy after christmass.Should come back down.

I recomend the Weaver Grand Slam 6X20 with target dot and fine cross hair. Fine sharp image, excellent tracking with windage and elevation at 1/8th".

what with all this name dropping, here's my 2 cents worth. love pentax 4.5-14, 6-24 lightseeker(same as black diamond, comes w/burris instructions), older 3000 series b&l, newer ones even better, nikon monarchs. your choice, they're all good. swfa, bear basin, etc. all can be beaten price wise by fox optics out of mo. 877 806 2977. have fun and good luck.

I have a 3200 and a 4200 both do a decent job. As with any good quality scope the optics are very good. It's just a matter of preference Sightron gets the top honors you won't be sorry. I never knew what a sightron was till I joined this forum. I got a simmons 6X20X50 with a rifle I bought. And for a scope under $100 dollars, for some one on a budget, it ain't bad. And Midway USA has them for $79.95. I left it on the rifle and it has held up and has clear optics. I very seldom buy new anymore as most quality scopes give lifetime warranties even if you are not the owner, and there are some really nice scopes out there if you can waait. Merry Christmas everyone

Matt, Just remenber you always get what you pay for. The more you spend the better it is going to be. Always buy the best scope you can afford. Rifles come and go but everybody always keeps their scopes for years. Let you wallet be your guide. The Very Best S&B 12X50X60 $3149.00, March 10X60X52 $2795.00 Nightforce BR 12X42X56 $1360.00 If these are out of your price range The Sightron lll 8X32X56 kind of fill the gap between the very best and all the rest at around $800.00 is a real nice scope for the money. If this is still to much I would recommend you look for a good used one on ebay. The Veri-X lll Leupolds can be bought for around $500.00 in excellent shape. This is not a bad way too go. I my opinion the Veri-Xlll have far better glass than any of the new Leupold VX series!!

Here's my "budget" 400-500 yd. prairie dog scope on a 17 FB XP-100--
