Berger recommended VLD seating depth test anyone tried it?

Great question Amamnn. I just purchased the VLD seater stem from Wilson for my bullet seating die so I would like to know this also.

FYI, I just pulled out a target I had cut out that was shot at 300 yards using Berger 105 VLD bullets. The 5 shot group measured .387 inches. I recorded everything about this group as it was the best group I had shot with my 6 mm BR. This group was shot with a .030 jump on my rounds.

I got suitable conditions this morning to test .010 thou jammed vs .04 thou jumped. I shot five 5 shot groups at 300yds. Mostly I ran two targets and alternated jumped and jammed shots.

The average of the jammed 5 targets was 1.46" with an extreme spread of 1.14". The average for the jumped 5 targets was 1.17" with an extreme spread of .67". So the jammed seating depth shoots smaller groups consistently. This conflicts with my testing at 150yds a couple of weeks ago where the .04" jumped were showing good promise.

I reckon I'm closer to where it should be with the jammed seating so will vary the depth by .003 either side then try a powder change of .1gn either side of the current 30.8gn varget.

I have a 30" Brux barrel 1in 8 twist. Shooting 105 Bergers VLD's I started on the lands and kept moving it back until I got to .040 and it was shooting in the low 1's for 5 shot groups. I had 3 groups under .0040 It didn't group at all closer than .030

I loaded up some 308 155 grain, and 80 grain 22-250 with the Berger load test tonight. I did not go with the 10 thou jammed, (worried about pulling one) I went right at the rifling, then 40, 80, 120.

Hopefully shoot them next week!
