berger 88gr

Hey guys, I have shot many woodchucks with berger 95s and 105s. These bullets just poke 6mm holes in and out. Most of the time the chucks leave a red trail and make it in the hole.
Was wondering what kind of results guys are getting with the berger 88gr?
I am looking for a bullet with a high bc and good expansion in the 6.
These bullets shoot great and have a high bc.

Hit 'em in the thick part and chunks go flying, nick them and it pokes holes. Aim for bone. Source of some of the most spectacular and most disappointing hits I've seen. Hit a PD head to tail or tail to head dead center and there isn't anything left but skin.

Howdy !

If your 6mm has enough case capacity, and the ranges you shoot varmints at allows; then bullets like Sierra's excellent
85HPBT or a "V"-Max might work well for you.

The Sierra 85 is a proven performer, and their weight consistency per box is better than ANY 6mm bullets I've weighed. This includes " custom " 6mm bullets.

While I myself have not yet tried any, one of the new-wave
"green" bullets with a powdered metal technology core might also work; as these should always " expand " after contact.

Thanks for your thoughts. Sierra makes great bulets. I have those 85gr mk. But I was looking for a higher bc since this gun will be used for beyond 400 yds. I will give the 88gr berger a try on chucks and see what they actually do.

had the same problem with pass thru shots and ghogs crawling into their holes to die. i prefer the highest bcs for bullets , but most "varmint" bullets have lower bcs than target/match ones. i decided to hollowpoint the target bullets and tried quite a lot of techniques before finding one that worked. i spin the bullet in a b&d drill mounted upside down in a vise. file the tip as the bullet spins until shortened just under the diameter of the smallest drill i can find. i used to hold the bullet in a homemade jig under a drillpress and slowly lower the drill into the tip opening it up. i found a small drill with a large shank that i now hold and insert slowly into the ground bullet tip still in the b&d drill. then smooth out the tip with steel wool inserted in an empty 45 cal acp case, and presto...a sharp shiney hollowpoint that EXPLODES after making the usual 22 or 243 cal hole. chest shots usually have no exit wounds, gut shots unfortunately are often quit revealing. a little bit of work, i know, but in the dead of winter such projects pay off now that varmint harvest is the order of the day. you might be surprised at the large empty space some target bullets have allowing complete disenteretation after impact, therby dumping all their energy. it works for me.[/quote] if i can see you, i can touch you.BANG!

Hey, +1 on the 88 Berger being not so good on non bone hits, its a consistent accurate bullet, relatively easy to load for but the very small meplat doesn't open up so good on soft tissue, even when it is running in hot loads.

I would look at the 87 v-max, comparable bc, but maybe some doubt as to consistency, certainly an explosive reputation.

The best High BC bullet for varminting use that also offers excellent accuracy is the 105 A-max IMO. It is also relatively consistent, v-maxes and the Nosler varmints (I use the 80s) can have .010" - .011" ES variation base to ogive, 105 A-maxes will typically be between .003" - .004" ES. I use the 105 A-maxes out to 600yrds on rabbits and magpies and have no hesitation in their effectiveness varminting, chucks seem quite tough a bit like the possums over here (we call them terminators kos they just keep going), so based on my varminting experience with the 88s I wouldn't recommend them for that use. At the range the 88s take about .5moa less windage than say the 80grn Nosler varmint over 500yrds, so no arguments with the BC advantage.
