trimming meplats on 88 gr berger varmints

Hello folks, i am having a rifle built in 6x47lapua and was planning on using this rifle for vermin, our red fox and roe deer.

I was mainly wondering if trimming the meplats on the 88gr bergers would aid their expansion?

many thanks from bonny scotland

Hey John,

Well, it certainly would if you trimmed enough to really open up the hollow point, but have you tried the Berger bullets yet? They tend to open up pretty well "as is", especially if you stick to their "Hunting" line, as opposed to the "Target" line. The hunting bullets have thinner jackets, and are normally give some pretty explosive performance.

Give 'em a try first, and you may wind up saving yourself some time.

thanks for the reply kevin.

i have used the 95gr vld in .243 but stopped using them because there was no expansion on vermin or on broadside fox but i suppose that was maybe because i couldnt push them hard enough out of my 20" 1in9 twist barrel.
An over max load of 46gr N560 only pushed them to 2809fps.

Hi,

I am using the 88grn Bergers High BC FB for varminting in NZ. I have found that even on small bodies such as hares, so long as they hit bone they open up very well (I don't meplat trim). I shot a hare at 250 yrds from a 6BR yesterday and it was easily as destructive as a the 55grn V-max in my .223. So I would have thought on foxes and Roe deer just use them as they are.

I know on magpies they don't open but their mass is so small it doesn't matter they still end up dead with one shot, even with the 55 grn V-maxes from the .223 on magpies I have found they are not that explosive.

But I can say the Bergers are wickedly accurate :-)
