Benchrest sporter

Been shooting RFBR for 2yrs, and shooting in sporter class for 1yr. Next yr I really want to work on my sporter shooting and bring my scores up. Any tips on shooting sporter class rifles.I could really use the help. Thanks

Dale

Tell us more about your current set up. What rifle are you shooting? .22 or .17? What front/rear rests? What have you accomplished to date? i.e. bedding, action work, etc.

Are you shooting 50 yd., 25 bulls? What is your average score?

James I'm shooting RBA with a custom Rem. 37 with a Douglas barrel. Trigger is just a little to heavy to shoot free recoil so I have to give it at least a light hold. It has been bedded in what I think is a Turner Stock. I shoot Eley Black box. In 5 matches this yr low of 233, high 245, ave. is 240. Front rest is a Fudd top and Hart bottom and a rear rest made by Jim Jackson. Scope is a 6X Buris. Thanks

Dale, have you tried a different font rest with a different bag setup, the Fudd top might be to hard. Have you tried different torque settings. How about the fore-end stop on the rest, changing balance of the rifle. Have you tried moving the scope fore and aft a little, just some possibilities that I've encountered in the little time I had a sporter. Bag setup is crucial.

Joe, thanks for the input. I will give all those a try. My heavy rifle is so forgiving I guess I think all rifles should be like that. Every target I will get 2-4 wild shots that will drop 2 to 4 pts each, that just isn't exceptable. I have the original Hart top but it is not a windage top. I can play with that and see if it makes a difference. Our benches might be some of the problem. They are old wood benches, not very stable. On the days I get to the range I will be spending the majority of the time working with this rifle so thanks for the suggestions.
